Culture
Bogomilovo was established in the early 16th century under the name Teke, meaning “holy grave”. East of Bogomilovo lies the site of Atiran, where traces of a large Roman roadside station on the Augusta Traiana–Philippopolis route can be found. The area around Bogomilovo also contains remains of a Thracian settlement and burial mounds.
A local legend associates the Bobata well with a spring whose water was brought to Bogomilovo. The Ivanka Terzieva Chitalishte permanently maintains amateur groups for arranged folklore, old urban songs, and authentic folklore. A sarcophagus found in connection with Teke remains in a small structure in Bogomilovo. Tiles associated with the Thracians, as well as parts of a Thracian chariot, have also been found in the area.
Teke attracted visitors from various places who came to pray and took a handful of “magic earth” with them. On Lazarus Day, Bogomilovo’s Lazarki group wears colourful traditional costumes, sings through the village, and visits homes. St George’s Day traditionally includes a communal horo; the celebrations also feature antiphonal singing and re-enactments of traditional rituals. At Christmas, the Koledari group traditionally walks through the village and visits homes. Every year, Bogomilovo celebrates Babinden with a gathering of young mothers and grandmothers.
Culinary Traditions
The festival in Bogomilovo includes a demonstration in which 100 kilograms of lyutenitsa are cooked in a large pan. The festival programme includes tastings and a farmers’ market, as well as children’s workshops and a culinary academy.
Nature
Bogomilovo is part of the Natura 2000 protected area BG0000628 Chirpanski Heights. BG0000628 comprises forest habitats of the eastern downy oak and protects habitat for the European souslik.
Geographical Location
Bogomilovo lies in the southern foothills of the Sarnena Sredna Gora. The village centre is situated at an elevation of approximately 250 metres, while the terrain generally slopes towards the southeast. The village lies on both sides of the main road between Burgas and Plovdiv.
Road III-6602 runs through Bogomilovo. It connects the village northeastwards with Stara Zagora and southwards with Road II-66; the wider road network also leads towards I-5 and the Trakia motorway.
