Culture

History

Near Rudozem stands the medieval Koznik Fortress on a rock above Rudozem. It has been documented since the 14th century, can be reached via the Kechi Kaya–Koznik ecological trail, and was part of a defensive system of fortresses in the Rhodopes. Archaeological work at Koznik revealed a 50-meter-long eastern wall, a two-meter-wide entrance, and finds such as a bronze bracelet dating from the 12th to the 13th century.

The Municipality of Rudozem is described as a place with 20 archaeological sites, including settlements, necropolises, church ruins, fortresses, and ancient roads from pre-Roman, Roman, Late Antique, and medieval periods. An archaeological sanctuary of national importance is associated with Tsigansko Gradishte Mountain, also called Chengene Hisar, and the village of Mochure. An ancient caravan road also ran through the Rudozem area, crossing the Rhodopes and connecting Thrace with the Aegean plain.

Nature

The Plovdivtsi Eco-trail is 7,000 meters long within the Municipality of Rudozem. Protected areas are home to species such as capercaillie, wolf, bear, chamois, and marbled polecat, as well as eight bat species. Tsigansko Gradishte contains 11 valuable natural habitats. The protected site of Sadilishteto in Plovdivtsi was designated in 2023 to preserve habitats of rare and endangered plant and animal species.

The nearby Sveta Varvara Waterfall is located in the Rudozem area near the Greek border; it plunges 12 meters from a horseshoe-shaped rock into a small pool.
