Karst Landscapes and Trails in the Rhodope Mountains

The Chair Lakes protected area, with seven lakes formed by landslides, lies near Trigrad. The Trigrad Gorge is also a protected area. Its many caves include the Devil’s Throat Cave and Haramiya Cave. These names give the region its distinctive karst character and offer specific points of interest for anyone interested in caves and landscapes.

Several well-marked tourist trails of varying lengths pass through Trigrad. There are also cycling and horse-riding trails in the surrounding area, as well as a riding centre. More than 20 hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes lead from the villages of Smilyan, Mogilitsa and Arda to scenic destinations.

Another trail described in detail starts on the Smolyan–Pamporovo road, near the arch of the “Sveti Panteleimon” monastery. The marked eco-trail leads to the Nevyastata rock formation and Turluka. It is less than 1 km long and has rest areas, panoramic platforms and information boards about the flora and fauna of the Rhodope Mountains. Places for Culture and Special Discoveries

The Rhodope Karst Museum in Chepelare is considered unique in the Balkans. Its exhibits include minerals and crystals, a leopard’s lower jaw, and a reconstructed cave bear skeleton standing 4.5 m tall. The exhibition combines the museum’s geological focus with striking finds and a large-scale reconstruction.

Shiroka Laka is designated an architectural and folklore reserve and is known for Rhodope houses such as the Zgurovska, Uchikovska and Grigorovska houses. The international Kukeri festival “Pesponedelnik” takes place in the village every year on the first Sunday in March. The National School of Folklore Arts “Shiroka Laka” is also part of the village’s cultural identity: singers, dancers and musicians are trained there in Bulgarian folk arts. Several mountain trails also lead from Shiroka Laka to the highest parts of the Rhodope Mountains and to natural attractions such as Lednitsa Cave and the “Momata” rock formation.

In Zlatograd, the “Zlatograd” Ethnographic Area Complex is an open-air museum with an ethnographic museum, craft workshops and an exhibition on water-powered installations. Another trail there starts at the “Vodenitsa” or “Tepavitsa” watermill and ends at the 865 m-high “Sv. Nedelya” peak. The range of attractions makes Zlatograd appealing to travellers who want to combine crafts, the history of technology and a hike. At Momchilova Fortress, visitor services include guided tours; visitors can also mint a souvenir coin themselves using a blacksmith’s press.

At the “Pri Vodenitsata” tavern, visitors can try Zlatograd cuisine specialities: kachamak made from freshly ground flour, patatnik and klin. Since 2003, the village of Smilyan has held its Smilyan Bean Festival every year on the last weekend of November. These two examples add a culinary dimension, one through specific dishes and the other through an annual festival.
