Lakes, Waterfalls and Rock Formations
The Chairete protected area encompasses six natural landslide lakes. Another distinctive natural feature is Nastanska Mogila: this rock formation covers 3 hectares and lies at an elevation of 1,200 metres. Its characteristic rocky ridge ends in a trunk-like shape. Struilski Dol Waterfall is also part of the landscape in the Devin area. It lies on a river and has a drop of 3 metres.
The Trigrad Gorge is a particularly striking rocky landscape. The protected gorge is 7 kilometres long; north of Trigrad, the Trigradska River carved it through marble cliffs. In the Devil’s Throat Cave, the same river forms a 42-metre-high underground waterfall. The Stara Gora nature reserve, also called Shabanitsa, lies in the Trigrad area at an elevation of 1,700 to 1,800 metres. Hiking Along the River Meanders
The Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata eco-trail starts in the Struilitsa locality and follows the river meanders. Metal bridges run alongside the river. The main trail is about 4 kilometres long. A shorter side trail takes about 30 minutes to reach Samodivsko Praskalo Waterfall. This lets you choose between the main trail and the shorter detour when planning your day; both distances offer concrete guidance for choosing your hike.
The Shiroka Laka–Devin–Borino tourist route also offers a way to navigate the area: it runs east to west through Devin Municipality. If you’re planning to visit Trigrad, you should also factor the drive into your day. The road to Trigrad passes through the gorge and is a typical single-lane mountain road with two-way traffic.
Experiences and History in Trigrad and Devin
Trigrad has several riding centres that offer horse riding for amateurs and beginners. Haramiyska Cave in the Trigrad area is a shaft-type cave and is considered an attraction on the boundary between classic and extreme tourism. These experiences offer a different focus from a walk along the river meanders.
Kavursko Kale, also called Kaleto, is part of the area’s cultural history. The fortress was in use from the 6th to the 13th century; Kavursko Kale is also designated a cultural monument of local significance. A medieval settlement once stood in the Lakata locality.
