Banite’s thermal mineral springs emerge beside the riverbed of the Malka Arda in the Western Rhodopes. Their combined flow rate is 500 litres per minute. Remains of an ancient bath have been excavated near Banite’s mineral springs.
Nature
Banite’s mineral water is hyperthermal and has a temperature of 42°C; its total mineralisation is 0.94 g/l. During the summer season, an outdoor mineral pool with a spacious sunbathing area is available in the centre of Banite. Banite also offers preventive and balneological treatments for chronic disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
Hiking
The Oryahovski Waterfalls eco-trail begins below the church in Banite, is marked in blue and white, and leads on an easy hike of approximately 3.5 km with an elevation gain of 120 m. The first waterfall is about 45–50 minutes from the starting point and is 10 metres high. The trail has three bridges, two pavilions, and four tables with benches.
The route along the Malka Arda includes visitor infrastructure such as pavilions, wooden bridges, shelters, benches, and fountains. The Samotnoto-Darvo eco-trail above Banite is a marked, 2 km-long, steep route with a rest area and a water source.
The ascent to Svoboda Peak begins at Svoboda Hut, which can be reached via a narrow asphalt road; there is a spacious parking area and a meadow there.
Cuisine
Local restaurants, taverns, family celebrations, fairs, and traditional holidays offer opportunities to sample Rhodope dishes in Banite. Rhodope kolatsi are described as thick pancakes baked on a hot tikla and served with homemade jam, honey, or cheese. In the Rhodope culinary tradition, kachamak can be prepared with wheat flour or potatoes and filled with curd cheese, cheese, leeks, eggs, or cooked meat.
