Culture

The historic city centre of Ancient Plovdiv preserves a homogeneous structure and remarkable historical layering. Plovdiv’s architecture retains remnants from antiquity, the Middle Ages, the National Revival and modern culture. The Ancient Plovdiv architectural and historical reserve preserves more than 200 cultural monuments from seven historical periods, including Nebet Tepe, the Ancient Theatre, Hisar Kapia, historic streetscapes, museum houses, galleries and craft workshops.

The Regional Ethnographic Museum–Plovdiv presents traditional Bulgarian material and spiritual culture from the Plovdiv region, the Rhodopes and Sredna Gora during the National Revival period. Its collections include copper vessels, ceramics, old weapons, shepherds’ wood carvings, jewellery, ecclesiastical objects, lace, traditional costumes, musical instruments and urban interiors.

Nature

Plovdiv’s three hills are designated as natural landmarks in an urban setting. The Municipality of Plovdiv has four protected areas: the natural landmarks Mladezhki Hill, Danov Hill and Hill of Liberators, as well as the protected locality Little Cormorant Roost along the Maritsa.

The protected area on Mladezhki Hill encompasses most of the hill and protects its geomorphological formation of syenite rock as well as rare endemic plants. Mladezhki Hill also contains numerous rare, endemic and protected plant species.

Orientation

Knyaz Alexander I Street is the main pedestrian zone in the centre of Plovdiv. Tourist signs for pedestrian navigation help visitors plan walking routes to more distant destinations and estimate the distance and arrival time. Plovdiv is the most important railway junction in southern Bulgaria.
