Perushtitsa: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Red Church, also known as the Basilica of Saint Mary, is a partially preserved Late Antique and early medieval Christian monument near Perushtitsa. It was in use from the 4th to the 14th century and is designated as a monument of national importance. A 700-metre-long footpath leads to the Red Church, where a visitor centre has been built.

Culture

The Danov School was built in 1850 in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel. Today, it serves as a museum and art gallery. Temporary and visiting exhibitions by Bulgarian artists are held in the basement.

The Church of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael contains a stone sarcophagus with the remains of revolutionaries. In 1876, the Danovo School was converted into a hospital operated with funds provided by Lady Emily Strangford.

The Perushtitsa Historical Museum offers themed tours and lectures in its museum halls and at associated historical monuments.

Landscape and Trails

Perushtitsa is described as a starting point for hikes in the Chernatishki section of the Western Rhodopes. Eco-trails connect some of Perushtitsa’s cultural heritage sites and offer views of the historical and natural landscape.

The megalithic sanctuary of Manastirski Skali is described as being approximately 5 km south of Perushtitsa in the mountains. The approach described is to drive towards Skobelevo and Churen; then park near the turn-off to the monastery and continue on foot along an unpaved road.

Historical Sites

The Peristitsa Fortress stands on a rocky hill 668 metres high, less than 3 km south of Perushtitsa.

The Monument of the Three Generations is 23 metres high and stands on Vlasevitsa Hill above Perushtitsa. It offers views of the entire settlement, the city of Plovdiv and the Rhodope Mountains. It can be reached by car or on foot via a paved road.

Wine and Art

Vinograd Wine Cellar in Perushtitsa offers tours of the winery and wine tastings upon prior request. Red, white and rosé wines are produced there.

The art gallery in Perushtitsa hosts classical music concerts and lectures on art and science.
