The municipality of Laki is located in the northeastern Western Rhodopes, a highly dissected mountainous region crossed by the Manastirska, Belishka, Dryanovska, Yugovska and Lakinska rivers. The Komin Dere eco-educational trail begins in Laki and runs for approximately 4 km to the hamlet of Braykovitsa. Along the way, it passes protected and rare plants, relics and endemic species. The trail includes three pavilions, a panoramic viewpoint and four information boards with educational content.

Nature

The municipality includes part of the Red Wall Reserve, which is recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, as well as four listed natural monuments. Slivodolsko Padalo Waterfall is recorded as a 52-metre-high natural monument in the Red Wall Reserve. A scenic eco-educational trail around Holy Spirit Waterfall on the Manastirska River is approximately 4 km long and includes stairs, handrails, a footbridge and rest areas.

Giumburtia Waterfall is located on the Belishka River about 2 km beyond Belitsa, near the Kormisosh residence. The Laki area has diverse wildlife, including brown bears, chamois, mouflon, wolves, red deer, protected birds, otters and reptiles. The Kormisosh State Game Farm offers fishing, horseback riding, ecotourism, photo safaris, as well as excursions to historical sites and natural attractions.

Things to Do

The Belitsa–Cave Eco-trail begins at the first houses of Belitsa on the access road from Laki, follows the Belishka River and the slopes of the Krushevska Mountain Ridge, and is suitable for family visits. It ends at a natural cave with drawings of animals and people resembling prehistoric paintings.

Culture

The Nature and Heritage House in Laki is located about ten minutes from the town centre and displays an ethnographic collection as well as regional crystal formations. The house also contains a touchscreen information kiosk providing information about tourist destinations and cultural activities in the region.

The Holy Trinity Church in Yugovo was built in 1842; its surviving features include 19th-century wall paintings and an iconostasis with icons dated from 1846 to 1851. The Krastova Gora–Holy Trinity Monastery Complex is a pilgrimage centre with healing water from Ayazmoto. Traditional regional crafts that have been preserved include woodcarving, woodworking, weaving on a horizontal loom, knitting, sewing and embroidery.

The traditional Rhodope cuisine of the region is associated with potatoes as well as dairy and animal products. Local activities also include beekeeping, fish farming and raspberry cultivation.

Getting Around

Transport in the municipality of Laki is entirely by road. The municipal tourism programme identifies poorly maintained fourth-class roads as an access difficulty to attractions and some settlements. The municipality of Laki is located near the resort of Pamporovo and Bachkovo Monastery.
