Riverside scenery and cultural history in Asenovgrad

The municipality of Asenovgrad stretches along both banks of the Asenitsa River, which is also called the Chepelarska and the Chaya. These three names refer to the same river and help with geographical orientation. Those interested in culture can explore the region’s history in different ways at its museums and Asenovata Krepost fortress: from the Palaeolithic to the present day, from the urban life of earlier centuries to the almost 45-metre-long skeleton of an ancient Deinotherium.

The municipal themed trail “Rodopska Sveta gora” also gives your trip a cultural focus. It consists of four interconnected tourist routes. The routes therefore form part of a shared themed trail; this classification says nothing about their length, course or difficulty. If you are planning a holiday in Asenovgrad, you can consider this trail as one possible focus for your trip, alongside choosing which museums and historic sites interest you most.

History from the Palaeolithic to the present day

The Asenovgrad Historical Museum presents the region’s history chronologically, from the Palaeolithic to the present day. Renovated in 2005, the exhibition has its own distinct focuses: archaeology, Bulgarian history from the 15th to the 19th century, and modern and recent history. Alongside a broad historical timeline, clearly defined subject areas take centre stage. For travellers who enjoy viewing history in a wider context, this offers a way to connect a broad span of time with selected periods.

The Ethnographic House offers a very different historical impression. It presents urban everyday life from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Rather than covering the region’s entire chronology, the focus here is on daily life during a particular period. If you are travelling with children, this focus can prompt a conversation about how people’s lives have changed and the differences between the past and the present.

A remarkable find on an extraordinary scale

The “Dimitar Kovachev” Palaeontological Museum displays the almost 45-metre-long skeleton of an ancient Deinotherium. It was found near the village of Ezerovo, close to Pervomay. Its length makes it a striking subject for a museum visit and an accessible talking point for visitors of different generations. If you are particularly interested in archaeology and recent history, you can compare this museum visit with the corresponding focuses at the Historical Museum.

Fortress and church architecture

Asenovata Krepost is a cultural monument of national significance. The “Sveta Bogoroditsa Petrichka” church is located within the fortress. It was the first Eastern Orthodox church to have a tower built. The connection between the fortress and the church makes the two names a distinctive cultural theme for Asenovgrad. Those interested in architectural history and religious architecture will find a different way to explore the past here than in the museums’ chronological exhibitions.

For information about tourist sites and tourism-related events in the municipality, visit the Asenovgrad Tourist Information Centre. It can therefore be a useful place to start if you are looking for information on these topics during your stay. Which places or events you focus on will depend on whether you are more interested in museums, the fortress, the themed trail, or a combination of several of these. When choosing a holiday apartment in Asenovgrad, you can consider which cultural interests you want to shape your trip.
