Yakoruda: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Yakoruda is a starting point for hikes to Treshenik, a resort located above the town in the Rila Mountains. When looking for a holiday apartment to rent in Yakoruda, the landscape, trails and local history are the main focus.

Landscape

Yakoruda Municipality includes part of Rila National Park, with forests, high-mountain lakes and meadows, as well as views towards the Rhodopes and Pirin. Yakoruda Municipality and MTB-BG have developed and marked several mountain biking routes within the municipality.

From Treshenik, marked trails lead to Grunchar Hut, the Yakoruda Lakes and Mount Musala. The Rhodope narrow-gauge railway offers year-round tourist travel, connecting Yakoruda with Septemvri, Velingrad, Razlog, Bansko and Dobrinishte, and runs along the highest railway line in the Balkans.

Culture

Yakoruda is associated with Revival-period houses in the town centre, built in the Razlog–Chepino architectural style. Religious buildings include the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1835, the Church of Saint George and a mosque completed in 1952.

In Yakoruda, Christians and Muslims celebrate St George’s Day together; on this occasion, the local community revives the old Topene na belezi ritual. A museum collection in the community centre contains more than 1,050 exhibits from the fields of archaeology and ethnography, as well as photographs, manuscripts and coins.

Trails

The route from Yakoruda to Nehtenski Waterfall begins in the town’s central square, initially heads towards Yundola and then follows the main road along the river. The round trip covers 23.5 km. The route is rated as having low technical difficulty and requiring little physical effort; the estimated duration is 2–4 hours.

The 23.5 km consist of 9.0 km of asphalt, 14.2 km of unpaved roads and 0.3 km of footpaths to the waterfall. At route point 11.7 km, the route reaches a wooden bridge; signs there point to the waterfall. The final approach takes about one minute to a wooden platform along a wide, easily walkable path. It then takes a further 2–3 minutes to reach Nehtenski Waterfall itself over more difficult and dangerous terrain.

On the Way

Yakoruda Mineral Bath station is the nearest narrow-gauge railway access point for the walk to Kalyata Fortress. The fortress is visible from the station and can be reached via an unmarked path. The walk from Yakoruda Mineral Bath station to Kalyata takes 20–30 minutes and offers views towards three mountains.
