Mountain lakes, forests and protected nature

The section of Rila National Park within Yakoruda Municipality includes forests, high-altitude lakes and mountain meadows. A notable destination for nature lovers is the Yakoruda Lakes: this group of three glacial lakes lies in the eastern part of the Rila Mountains and is a popular destination for tourists. If you want your trip to focus mainly on mountain scenery and lakes, this gives you a clear starting point for choosing your excursions.

Individual protected areas also shape the municipality’s natural character. Bəlatsite is a protected area designated to preserve centuries-old white pines. The “Chesnensko Usoe” waterfall, also known as the “Yakoruda Waterfall,” is 15 to 16 metres high. These different natural features can help you choose whether to focus your stay on lakes, forests or waterfalls.

Hikes and mountain biking routes

The Treshtenik resort area is the starting point for numerous hiking routes, including trails to the Granchar and Zavrachitsa huts. It is located 14 kilometres north of Yakoruda. For hikers, Treshtenik is therefore a clear location to use when planning a trip; the huts are named destinations on the routes that start there.

The Treshtenik–Mochura mountain biking route offers another way to explore the area. It is considered suitable for beginners and even children. The route leads to a small lake on the Banenska, with a rest area nearby. This is a specific option for anyone who would like to combine a mountain bike ride with time by the lake. The Treshtenik–Semkovo mountain biking route is a separate route that begins at the Treshtenik resort complex above Yakoruda.

Thermal waters and choosing a location

The Banite area has a thermal water source with a flow rate of 32 litres per second and a temperature of 42 °C. The thermal water source in Banite adds another natural feature to the municipality’s landscapes and hiking destinations. Treshtenik is a particularly interesting location if hikes starting from there are among your travel plans.

Church, ritual and folklore

The early Christian Djerzhdevden Church, also known as the Gergyovden Church, is located on the outskirts of Yakoruda. It is a cultural point of interest in its own right, alongside the municipality’s natural destinations. The “Topene na Belezi” ritual, in turn, links a distinctive local tradition with the shared life of different religious communities: Christians and Muslims have celebrated it together in Yakoruda for eleven consecutive years; it was revived by the local community.

The groups at a chitalishte also offer a glimpse into local cultural life. They include a women’s singing group performing folk and old urban songs, a men’s folklore group, and children’s groups for folklore, modern and folk dances. When planning your trip, you can combine nature experiences with an interest in music, dance and local traditions, while deciding for yourself which aspects to focus on during your holiday.
