Culture and History

Nicopolis ad Nestum was founded in 106 AD by the Roman Emperor Trajan to celebrate his victory over the Dacians. From the 2nd to the 6th century, the city developed into a center of economic, political, and cultural importance. It is described as one of the few surviving ancient cities in Bulgaria and the only ancient city from the Roman period in the Rhodope Mountains.

The Church of St. George in Garmen was built in 1898 and is a cultural monument of national importance. In nearby Kovachevitsa, the Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1848; it too is a cultural monument of national importance.

Nature and Trails

The nearby Kaninska Eco-Trail is 13 km long. It runs through wooded and rocky terrain, offering scenic views and rich biodiversity. Tour options on the trail range from 2 to 10 hours.

Near the Kaninska Eco-Trail there is a bivouac with a shelter, tables, benches, and fire pits; there are also places for picnics or camping in tents.

Nearby Kozi Kamak is a protected natural monument consisting of a distinctive rock formation in the territory of Kovachevitsa.

Nearby Ognyanovo is a spa resort within the Municipality of Garmen. The Ognyanovo thermal water deposit comprises seven natural springs and two drilled wells.

The Zagarde plane trees are located 0.5 km west of Garmen, along a paved road in Zagarde, which is now a neighborhood of Garmen. They are over 600 years old and were protected in 1968 because of their age, size, and beauty.
