Forests, Rocks and Waterfalls
The Tamnata Gora Nature Reserve protects ancient fir, beech and spruce forests in the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. It lies within the territory of Kovachevitsa in the Municipality of Garmen. Kozijat Kamak offers a different glimpse of nature: this protected natural landmark is a unique rock formation in the area of Kovachevitsa and covers about 300 m². From there, you can enjoy a panorama of the Kayaliiski Rocks and the distant peaks of Pirin to the west. The area attracts researchers and tourists.
Siniya Vir adds its own distinctive touch to the landscape. This cascade of waterfalls lies in the valley of the Kanina River and includes blue-green pools. From Kovachevitsa, Siniya Vir can be reached by an hour-long walk to the west. The Zagrade plane trees, over 600 years old and protected since 1968, stand in the Garmen area. The region thus brings together a variety of natural features: a forest reserve, a rock formation, waterfalls and ancient protected trees.
At Rizova Dupka, the terrain takes centre stage: the karst gorge is 10 to 12 metres deep. Vertical wooden ladders lead to a corridor that is 15 metres long and two metres wide.
Architecture and Hiking Around Kovachevitsa
Kovachevitsa is the only architectural reserve in the Municipality of Garmen. The reserve includes the Church of St Nicholas, a monastic school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five farm buildings. The church was built in 1847; in 1900, it was given a four-storey bell tower. For a trip focused on culture, both the historic church and the reserve’s range of building types offer specific points of interest.
The Kanina Eco-Trail offers an active way to explore the region. Its hiking options range from two to ten hours. The long circular route starts in Kovachevitsa, passes through Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo, and returns to Kovachevitsa. The range of hiking durations on offer is useful for planning your day; the circular route described is one specific option. Mountain hikes are also available in Leshten.
Thermal Waters in Ognyanovo
Ognyanovo is a balneological centre in the Municipality of Garmen. Its hyperthermal mineral water has a temperature of 40°C. The thermal water area includes seven natural springs and two additional drilled wells. If thermal waters are the deciding factor for your trip, Ognyanovo stands out as a destination in its own right; if you’re more interested in exploring the architectural reserve or hiking options, you can look for accommodation to suit those interests instead.
