Lustenau: Discover the Rhine Landscape, Trails and Culture

Lustenau combines the flat landscape of the Rhine Valley with special trails, a vibrant local history and excursion destinations along the Old Rhine. If you are looking for a trip with varied daily plans, you can combine nature, exercise, culture and family-friendly discoveries here. When choosing your holiday apartment in Lustenau, it is therefore worth first considering whether your trip will be shaped more by hikes, cycling excursions, museum visits or relaxing hours in the countryside.

Hiking Trails between the Rhine Valley and the Old Rhine

There are more than 60 kilometres of signposted hiking trails in and around Lustenau. The network has more than 226 signposts at 93 locations. The hiking trails in the flat valley floor of the Rhine Valley in and around Lustenau are marked yellow and white and classified as “easy to walk”. This makes it easy to adapt your daily plans to different interests without having to commit to just one type of excursion.

One specific option is the Lustenau–Schmitter circular trail, which is 4.5 kilometres long. This accessible circular hike starts and ends near the Austrian-Swiss national border. It follows the Diepoldsau bank of the Old Rhine to the Schmitter Bridge and returns along the Lustenau riverside path. One section invites you to stop and observe waterfowl; there are also rest areas and information boards with information about nature. The Old Rhine recreational area complements this landscape with riparian forests, walking paths and natural bathing areas.

History by Bike and in the Museum

Anyone who wants to get to know Lustenau actively while exploring its cultural history can include the Historic Cycling Tour in their plans. It covers various aspects of Lustenau’s history at 13 stations. There is also an interactive virtual version that can be experienced and listened to. Another cycling idea is the audio cycling trail “Across the Border”: it follows the Rhine Valley Cycle Path via Bregenz and Hard and continues along the Rhine embankment to Lustenau.

At the Embroidery – Museum. Archive. Communication, or S-MAK for short, various aspects of embroidery are the main focus. The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. The Rhine-Schauen Museum also presents the history of the Rhine, including its floods and inundations, as well as culture, technology and nature along the Rhine and in the Alpine Rhine Valley. For another cultural and historical excursion, the Jewish Museum Hohenems has set up 52 audio stations on the so-called “audio cycling trail” commemorating stories of people who fled between 1938 and 1945.

Excursions with Children and Local Impressions

The Am Moosbach Nature Adventure Park covers almost 2,000 square metres and is the largest playground in the northern part of the municipality of Lustenau. It features a drinking-water-fed stream modelled on the neighbouring Moosbach. The Moosbach is considered Lustenau’s last naturally meandering ditch. The nature adventure park is located along a walking and cycling path.

From March to December, Kirchplatz becomes the marketplace for the Luschnouar Market every Thursday and Saturday morning. Numerous market vendors offer food and other products and provide advice on the best ways to prepare their food. The former construction railway of the International Rhine Regulation also enables unusual excursions into the landscape around Lake Constance.

The Right Base for Planning Your Trip

Accommodation in Lustenau may be particularly suitable for your plans if you want to keep various travel ideas open: you can spend one day on the signposted trails, choose a cycling route or museum the next, and reserve another morning for the market or nature adventure park. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider which of these experiences are most important for your personal plans. This allows you to base your decision on the actual interests of your travel group without limiting your stay to a single excursion destination.
