Lech: Hiking Trails, Culture and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Lech
Lech am Arlberg offers an unusually varied mix of impressive landscapes, long hiking trails, regional history and special excursion destinations. Depending on whether you are planning extensive tours, cultural discoveries, a day in the water or winter sports, your stay can be arranged in different ways. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth considering the desired rhythm of your trip at an early stage.
Hiking through wild river landscapes and Arlberg villages
The Lechweg is around 125 km long and leads from the source of the Lech near Lake Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen. Along the way, it passes through one of Europe's last wild river landscapes. This scale makes the trail appealing to anyone who would like to combine their trip with a longer hiking route. For an excursion to Lake Formarinsee, the Lech local bus travels to the last stop at Formarinalpe; from there, the lake can be reached on foot in 20 minutes.
Another option is the Arlberg Trail. It comprises three stages and 40 km of hiking trails. The signposted circular hiking trail is 52 km long in total and is partly covered by cable cars. The Arlberg Trail also connects the five Arlberg villages of Lech, Zürs, Stuben, St. Christoph and St. Anton. This allows you to choose between a longer sequence of trails and individual stages with changing locations when planning your trip, without having to mix up the character of the respective tour.
Culture and history at Huber-Hus
There is also plenty to discover in Lech away from the trails. The Lech Museum is housed in Huber-Hus, a building constructed in the late 16th century. There, visitors gain insights into rural living and working culture. The museum presents a permanent exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions relating to socially relevant contemporary topics.
The settlement of the Walser people is part of the history of Tannberg: they moved to Tannberg in the first half of the 14th century. The oldest documentary evidence of the Walser people in Tannberg is dated 11 March 1453. The Skyspace concept, featuring light art developed for it by James Turrell, also offers a special cultural experience. When the dome is open, it can only be experienced at sunrise and sunset. Tickets for guided tours and the shuttle to Skyspace-Lech are available online or in person at the tourist office in Lech.
Excursions for different day plans
For a varied day with children, the Waldschwimmbad Lech outdoor swimming pool between Lech and Zug am Arlberg is a good option. It has a 25-metre sports pool, an Aquafit pool with bubble loungers and massage jets, a children's and baby pool, as well as a wide-wave slide. The pool can easily be reached by the Lech local bus or on foot.
The Arlenzauberweg leads from the mountain station of the Lech-Oberlech cable car via Libellensee and past the flower meadows on Schlegelkopf to Rud-Alpe, or in the opposite direction. At more than 20 stations, special characteristics of animals and plants are presented. The Green Puzzle Ring is a family trail from Lech to Rud-Alpe, where you can solve tasks together using a puzzle book. On the ascent to Balmalp through the Sagenwald, you encounter figures created during a sculptors' symposium.
The Gipslöcher nature reserve can also be incorporated into an exploration of the landscape. It extends across the fields of Kriegeralpe. The third stage of the Green Ring leads from Zug via the Kriegerhorn and Oberlech to Lech. Anyone wishing to discover the geology trail on Rüfikopf can take part in a guided hike once a week. This is exclusively intended for holders of the Lech Card; registration by 5 p.m. on the previous day is required.
Choose accommodation according to your own focus
For your holiday apartment or holiday house in Lech, you can therefore consider which experiences should shape your holiday. Long hiking routes such as the Lechweg and the Arlberg Trail call for trip planning with tour days scheduled in advance. The museum, Walser history and Skyspace set different accents, while the swimming pool, Puzzle Ring and Arlenzauberweg make several shorter activities possible. In winter, the Lech Zürs ski area expands the offering with 300 km of ski runs. This keeps your choice of accommodation closely linked to your desired travel programme, without requiring you to plan every day in the same way.
