Lambach: Abbey, Theatre and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Lambach
Lambach brings together a variety of themes: the treasury and convent garden of the abbey, the Baroque theatre, the Maria-Hilf Chapel on Buchberg, and hiking trails of different lengths. This mix makes it easy to tailor your trip to your own interests. Those who want to focus on culture will find points of interest in the collection, garden, theatre and chapel; those who enjoy walking can compare two routes by their distances. You can also plan your journey to the abbey by train or bicycle.
The Abbey Treasury and Convent Garden
The treasury of Lambach Abbey preserves liturgical vessels and precious vestments from several centuries. Vestments are liturgical textiles and garments; the vessels add objects used in worship to the collection. This means the focus is not only on individual precious objects, but also on the religious purpose for which such items were made. For travellers interested in religious culture, the treasury offers a clear cultural focus.
The convent garden features 15 sculptures, including six dwarfs, the four continents and Saint Adalbero. The different motifs provide a contrast with the sacred furnishings in the treasury: here, the focus is on garden sculptures, while there it is on liturgical objects and textiles. Together, the two themes offer a comparison between garden art and religious furnishings.
Baroque Theatre and Maria-Hilf Chapel
The Lambach Baroque Theatre is Austria’s only surviving monastery theatre. Its distinctive feature is this combination of Baroque theatre and monastery theatre. The Baroque theatre presents two to three productions per year. If you would like to include a performance in your trip, check the dates for your planned travel period.
The Maria-Hilf Chapel is located on Buchberg, north of Lambach, and is a domed central-plan building. In a central-plan building, the structure is organised around a central point; the dome vault describes the form of its overhead covering. These terms provide an accessible introduction to the chapel’s architecture and add a distinct architectural perspective to the themes of the collection and theatre. A pilgrimage to the chapel for priestly and religious vocations takes place at 7:30 pm on the fourth Friday of every month. As dates may change, check the information before your trip.
Hiking Trails and Getting to the Abbey
The Lambach Border Trail is 10.50 kilometres long. The Lambach – Stadl-Paura – Bad Wimsbach-Neydharting hiking trail measures 25.00 kilometres, making it more than twice as long. These distances provide a concrete starting point for choosing between the two routes. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and signage, as both may change.
From Lambach OÖ Markt station, it is a seven-minute walk to Lambach Abbey, with no elevation gain. Check current train connections before travelling, as transport conditions may change. The abbey can also be reached by bicycle via the Traun Cycle Path from Gmunden or Wels. The train and bicycle are two specific options to include when planning your journey.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Lambach, your planned activities are a useful guide: theatre dates and the monthly pilgrimage may matter if you are focusing on culture; for a more active trip, the hiking trails offer a direct comparison of distances. For a family trip, these interests can be given different weight rather than assuming that everyone travelling together has the same priorities.
