Freistadt: City Walls, Nature and Beer Culture

The Mühlviertel Castle Museum Freistadt displays around 21,000 exhibits from folk culture, craftsmanship and urban history. The exhibits are spread across nine floors, making the museum an extensive destination for anyone who wants to get to know Freistadt in more than just passing. On the ninth floor, an outdoor walkway leads around the building at a height of around 35 metres. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the city and the surrounding Mühlviertel hills.

Freistadt Castle, which is connected to the museum, was built in the 14th century. The Katharinenmünster is also part of the city’s distinctive appearance: it is Austria’s only five-nave basilica. For groups of eight or more, guided tours of the Mühlviertel Castle Museum are available at any time by prior arrangement. City Walls, Towers and Historic Routes

Freistadt’s largely listed old town is enclosed by city walls and gates. The fortifications are almost completely preserved and date back to the Gothic period. A prominent part of these fortifications is the Scheibling Tower. It is one of two round towers built in the 15th century as an addition to the city fortifications. The Scheibling Tower can be visited as part of a guided tower tour by appointment. Those who prefer to plan a longer historic route can take the Medieval Adventure Trail, a 25.1-kilometre path.

Nature, Water and Activity

Freistadt also offers a variety of landscape experiences outside the walls. The revitalised city moat features meandering paths and various themed gardens. Thurytal lies in the Feldaist Valley and is a natural and restored gem. These destinations reveal another side of the city and complement the historic sights with quieter sections amid greenery.

The municipality’s hiking network includes a total of 100 kilometres of trails. The Nordwaldkammweg is also part of Freistadt’s hiking options and is described as Austria’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. At Frauenteich, you can go stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating from May to September. Depending on your preferred pace of travel, you can make a day of urban history, a longer day of hiking or a seasonal activity on the water the focus of your trip.

Experience Freistadt’s Beer History

The BIER.KULT! TOUR traces Freistadt’s beer history and follows in the footsteps of breweries and inns. A special regional tradition is beer spiking: an iron rod, the beer spike, is heated to around 600°C and then dipped into beer chilled to 6–7°C for two to three seconds. This caramelises the sugar and causes the foam to rise.

The Alte Schmiede can be visited as part of the “Bierstacheln” tour by appointment. This allows Freistadt’s culinary side to be combined with a specific historical and craft experience.
