Vomp – Discover the Karwendel, culture and trails

The Way of St. James also passes Fiecht Abbey in Vomp. The Benedictine abbey was elevated to an abbey by Bishop Reginbert of Brixen in 1138. Those interested in the town’s earlier history can also place Vomp Parish Church in context: archaeological excavations have shown that a church already stood on this site as early as the 8th century. The basic form of the present church building was created between 1460 and 1480 by master builder Gilg Mitterhofer from Schwaz.

Another historic destination is Sigmundslust Castle. Archduke Sigmund the Rich in Coin had it built as a hunting lodge because of the abundance of game in the mountains. Sigmundslust was also home to Tyrol’s oldest printing works. In 1521, Josef Pirnsieder printed the first Catholic hymnal in the German language there.

Winter trails and regional discoveries

The surrounding area also offers various trails for a winter holiday. There is an 8 km cross-country ski trail on Vomperberg. The Hinterriß trail is 27 km long and takes winter sports enthusiasts through this landscape. As a culinary addition, you can include the show dairy on the Engalm: there, milk from the Engalm is processed directly into butter and cheese.
