Discover Steinberg am Rofan

Steinberg am Rofan lies on a sunny, secluded high plateau above Lake Achensee and is surrounded by three different mountain ranges. This location gives the village its own character: the focus is on mountain scenery, peaceful discoveries and routes with very different levels of difficulty. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied stay can therefore choose Steinberg am Rofan according to their planned activities – from short walks around the village to challenging mountain trails and cross-country ski tracks in winter.

Experience the mountain landscape and local history

The parish church of St. Lambert is an important cultural landmark. Its history goes back a long way: Steinberg am Rofan’s parish church was first mentioned in a document in 1188, and St. Lambert was later rebuilt in the Late Gothic style from 1419 to 1434. Inside the church, above the altar of the Sorrowful Mother on the left side, there is a depiction of the personified Trinity. The Stabat Mater cycle in Steinberg also comprises twelve numbered stations.

The history of mountaineering is also part of the village’s character. In 1911, Hans Dülfer and Hans Fiechtl were the first to climb the south ridge of the Guffert. Since 2021, Steinberg am Rofan has been one of the “Mountaineering Villages”. Anyone interested in historical traces and alpine traditions can also plan a hike to the “Raetic Inscriptions”. It leads from the Gufferthütte to a Raetic spring sanctuary in a cave-like cleft in the rock. There are traditional votive inscriptions there that have been declared European Cultural Heritage.

Short routes and challenging tours

For a manageable hike, the easy Bärenwald circular route starts and ends at the parish church in Steinberg am Rofan. The circular hike is 4.9 kilometres long and includes 170 metres of elevation gain. The Steinberg Panorama Circular Route and the easy circular hike to the Steinberger Loch also start and end at the parish church. The latter leads through the Steinberger Loch and is 2.9 kilometres long. This makes it possible to compare different day plans without every activity having to be the same length or difficulty.

Anyone looking for a considerably longer and difficult mountain tour will find a challenging option in Adlerweg Stage 07. The 18-kilometre stage leads from Steinberg am Rofan through the Brandenberg Alps (Rofan) to the Erfurter Hütte. A particularly distinctive section is the Gaismoosstollen, an unlit, natural tunnel carved into the rock. This condition is a factor in deciding whether the route suits your own excursion plans.

Winter between cross-country ski tracks and small slopes

There are also various options in winter. The S2 Guffert cross-country ski track starts at the cross-country skiing centre at an altitude of around 1,000 metres and runs for 7 kilometres through varied terrain as a moderately difficult, challenging track. It includes some steeper sections and around 150 metres of elevation gain. The S1 Dorfloipe Steinberg has short uphill and downhill sections and is recommended for experienced cross-country skiers.

For first experiences on skis, the Rofanlifte ski area offers manageable slopes for beginners. The facilities include a T-bar lift, a platter lift and a rope tow.

Plan your accommodation and journey

Choosing a holiday apartment in Steinberg am Rofan can be based particularly well on your personal daily itinerary. If your planned hikes start at the parish church, the village centre is an obvious reference point when searching. For travel by public transport, regional bus routes 4080 and 7801 run to Steinberg am Rofan; the specified stop is “Steinberg a. R. Kirche”. Those arriving by car can use the free car park at Steinberg am Rofan municipal office.

Another distinctive location is the Kraftplatz Steinberg am Rofan. The Austrian Federal Forests built it as a viewing platform made of locally sourced larch wood; the Kraftplatz can also be reached by bicycle. Such different points of interest help you look for the right accommodation for your preferred pace: with short discoveries in the village, active days in the mountains or a combination of nature and culture.
