Ramsberg: Alpine Pastures, Hiking Trails and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Ramsberg
Meadows, historic farms and alpine pastures provide a tangible setting for hikes around Ramsberg. Route Ramsau–Sonnalm-Schlittenstadl climbs in switchbacks to Ramsberg; from the Alte Kotahornalm, the view stretches to the glacier peaks of the Zillertal Alps. Alpine farming and cheese are also part of the area’s character. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth first considering whether you would rather spend your holiday hiking, exploring an alpine pasture or visiting a toboggan run.
Two settlement names with a history
Documents from the 13th century distinguish Ramsau as a valley settlement from Ramsberg as a mountain settlement. In this historical context, the names therefore do not simply refer to the same settlement with two different spellings. There is also a separate history of the municipality: until November 11, 1978, the municipality was called Ramsberg. The distinction between valley and mountain settlements offers a helpful historical perspective on the names associated with Ramsberg.
On foot past meadows and historic farms
Hiking route Ramsau–Sonnalm-Schlittenstadl, Route 2, climbs in switchbacks to Ramsberg. Along the way, it passes meadows and historic farms. The route description thus combines a clear ascent with a landscape where open spaces and traditional farms are among the visible features. If, when planning your holiday, you consider not only the destination but also the way there, this route offers just that sequence of switchbacks, meadows and farms.
Two return options are listed: take the same route back or return via Gerlosstein by bus. This is a practical distinction for planning your day, without implying a circular route or a specific hiking time. If you want to use the bus option, check the current timetable; trail conditions can also change.
Alpine pastures between mountain views and cheese
The Alte Kotahornalm is located in Ramsberg at an altitude of 1,630 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding glacier peaks of the Zillertal Alps. Its sun-weathered wooden façade and traditional charm define the character of the alpine pasture as described. It is a popular destination for hikers, families and mountain bikers. The view and the wooden façade offer different points of focus: one draws your gaze to the mountains, the other to the alpine pasture’s buildings.
At the Karlalm, located at an altitude of 1,750 metres, cows and calves are kept from late May to September. During the alpine summer, the Karlalm produces Tilsiter and mountain cheese in its own dairy. The cheese made there could be an option for a snack during a hike starting from the Hainzenberg gondola lift; check in advance whether it is available during your travel dates. The information about alpine farming and cheese production also provides a seasonal consideration for planning.
A toboggan run on Hainzenberg
On Hainzenberg, the Schlittenstadl-Sonnalm is located directly beside the ski slope in the small Gerlosstein ski area. The ski and toboggan hut is halfway along the seven-kilometre toboggan run. If you want to include a toboggan run in your holiday plans, its specific length and a named point along the route provide useful orientation. This is a different focus from the hiking route up to Ramsberg: here, the focus is on the toboggan run and its location in the ski area.
Experiences as a guide when looking for accommodation
Use your preferred daytime activities as an initial filter when looking for a holiday apartment. For a day of hiking, Route 2 and the Alte Kotahornalm offer different features: the path through meadows and past historic farms, and the views of the glacier peaks. For cheese and alpine farming, the Karlalm, with its seasonal livestock and its own dairy, is a distinct point of interest. The toboggan run on Hainzenberg, meanwhile, has a clearly stated length. This lets you tailor your search to the experiences that matter for your trip, without treating these different destinations as though they were the same.
