Discover Plansee
Plansee is located in the Reutte district of Außerfern, nestled in the Ammergau Alps. As Tyrol’s second-largest lake, it combines impressive scenery with a wide range of holiday ideas: swimming and surfing, a walk around the lake, boat trips, cycling tours and winter walks. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home at Plansee, you can therefore choose your base according to the experiences you have planned.
Water activities between Plansee and Lake Heiterwang
A narrow canal connects Plansee with Lake Heiterwang. In summer, boats operated by the Plansee and Lake Heiterwang boat service regularly run on both bodies of water. The passenger boats MS Margarethe and MS Wilhelm operate from the end of May to mid-October and call at a total of three landing stages. This connection offers a special perspective on the lake landscape without requiring you to limit your stay to a single section of shoreline.
Swimming is possible in Plansee, and most of the lake is freely accessible to swimmers. Surfing is also one of the possible activities. For the years 2021 to 2025, the Plansee bathing area at Hotel Seespitz received the overall rating “Excellent bathing water quality”. In addition, with water quality class I, Plansee is one of Tyrol’s cleanest lakes. A permit is required for diving, and diving is also restricted to three designated sites. The lake is designated as fishing area 7028.
Circular trails, cycling routes and wintertime alternatives
The circular hike around Plansee can be enjoyed in different ways: it either follows the lakeshore directly or circles the lake with panoramic views. At two landing stages, the route can be shortened by boat. A wheelchair-accessible hiking trail leads between Plansee and Lake Heiterwang. This provides different route options for planning your day, along with an additional change between land and water perspectives.
The surrounding area also offers clearly defined destinations for mountain bikers. One route leads from Plansee via Griesen to Garmisch and returns to the starting point via Ehrwald, Lermoos and Reutte. Another mountain bike route, particularly popular with experienced riders, runs via Neuwald-Kuhklause from Plansee to Urisee. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to plan a ride around the lake, a longer cycling tour or several different excursions.
Plansee is not limited to the warmer months. Winter walking routes lead around the lake. At the upper end of the Stuiben Waterfalls, you can reach Little Plansee, adding another scenic impression to your time at the larger lake.
Discoveries for shared holiday days
At the show dairy in the Musteralpe, you can watch through a glass window as the traditional craft of cheese-making is carried out. This complements the natural experiences with an insight into regional production. For families with children, the children’s playground on the sunbathing lawn at Sennalpe campsite is another specific destination, with swings and slides.
Choosing the right base
Searching for accommodation at Plansee can sensibly be combined with the kind of day you want to spend: guests who want to swim, surf or use the boat service will plan differently from those who are mainly interested in a circular hike, a mountain bike route or winter walks. For further orientation, you can also visit the pages for Stanzach, Bschlabs, Berwang, Ehrwald, Pfafflar, Mitteregg, Zöblen and Elmen. This allows you to compare different travel ideas before choosing your holiday apartment at Plansee.
