Castles and history along varied trails

One prominent destination is Landeck Castle. It was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by the Counts of Ulten on a high rock above the Inn. Today, the castle is a landmark of Landeck as well as an event and cultural centre with a permanent exhibition on history. In fifteen themed rooms, original objects and original documents convey historical connections. The gallery also presents exhibitions by contemporary artists from the regional and international scene, as well as presentations on current and historical topics.

The Landeck Castle Museum offers special Schwabenkinder guided tours for groups of ten or more. Prior registration is required to arrange an appointment. Those who like to combine culture with activity will find a considerably longer undertaking in the Tyrolean Castles Trail: The hiking trail is 65 kilometres long and can be completed in five daily stages. Landeck Castle, Biedenegg Castle, Wiesberg Castle, Schrofenstein Castle Ruins and Kronburg Ruins are located directly along the trail. The Castles Trail app supplements the points of interest with audio, video and text information and also serves as a navigation system.

Roman traces and medieval details

The Via Claudia Augusta also brings the history of the area to life. In the Landeck area, the Roman road ran largely along the slope between the Inn bridge near Starkenbach and Landeck, then continued via the “Platte” to Fließ. There, wheel tracks from different eras are visible in the rock. The Via Claudia Augusta Documentation Centre displays a copy of the Tabula Peutingeriana as well as Roman finds discovered along the historic road. One stage of the Inn Cycle Path from Martina in Switzerland to Landeck runs entirely along the Via Claudia Augusta.

Another special cultural and historical destination is the Brandopferplatz sacrificial site on the Pillerhöhe. Burnt offerings began in the Middle Bronze Age, approximately between 1600 and 1200 BC, and continued for more than 1,000 years. The Moosbruckschrofen hoard comprises 350 bronze objects from the Middle Bronze Age. At Berneck Castle, the castle chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew features significant late Gothic frescoes, including an altar fresco depicting Saint John. A gallery runs along the southern side of the castle above a 130-metre-high rock face and offers a view into the depths. Guided tours of Altfinstermünz are possible during opening hours, subject to prior registration, for groups of eight or more and begin at the visitor centre.

Nature park, moorland and glacial landscapes

The Kaunergrat Nature Park opens up a vast area for nature days. It covers 590 square kilometres of natural and cultural landscapes and stretches from the Upper Inn Valley to the Ötztal Alps. The area includes the Pitztal, the Kaunertal and the municipality of Fließ. Themed trails and guided hikes offer various ways to explore these landscapes. On Nature Watch excursions, you can observe chamois, ibex and marmots.

The Piller Moor moorland educational trail is an easy-to-overview option. The approximately 3-kilometre circular hike is designed to be easy and accessible. It leads to seven information stations and an 11-metre-high moor tower. Those wishing to understand the development of a glacial landscape can choose the Glacier Educational Trail: It leads from a moraine dating from around 1850 to the glacier gate of the Gepatschferner and provides information about glacial traces as well as the animal and plant life. The 26-kilometre Kaunertal Glacier Road passes through changing landscapes with alpine meadows, Swiss pine forests, mountain lakes, waterfalls, moraine slopes and glacial ice.

Choose the right starting point

For a day on the Venet, Landeck-Zams is the nearest railway station to the ski area. From there, it is a 15-minute walk to the valley station; alternatively, bus routes 1, 240 and 250 operate. The Zammer Lochputz can also be reached on city bus route 1, getting off at the “Zams Lochputz” stop. There, you can visit a demonstration power plant.
