Wildschönau: Discover Nature, Culture and Trails
Wildschönau combines impressive nature experiences with Tyrolean craftsmanship, regional traditions and trails for a variety of daily itineraries. Families and other travellers can choose between short walks, a gorge route suitable for pushchairs, museums, mountain rides and special excursion destinations. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering first which experiences should be the focus of your stay.
Trails for Relaxed and Active Days
The Wildschönauer Wirbelwindweg runs for four kilometres between Niederau and Oberau and includes several interactive stations. For a shorter walk, the Auenweg in Niederau is a good option: the almost level trail is one kilometre long, and the walking time is around 30 minutes. In addition, a medicinal herb nature trail explains which herbs and plants grow along the Auenweg and how they have traditionally been used.
The Kundler Klamm offers a different landscape experience. Its steeply rising rock walls, up to 200 metres high, characterise the approximately 3.5-kilometre gorge route. The hike begins in the Mühltal district and is also accessible with a pushchair. Access is subject to seasonal regulations: from 1 April to 15 November, the gorge is freely accessible. A little tourist train also runs between Mühltal and the entrance to the gorge; it takes 20 minutes for this route.
Those who would like to include mountain views in their daily itinerary can use the Schatzbergbahn or the Markbachjochbahn, which take visitors into the mountains by gondola. The ride on the 8-seater gondola to Markbachjoch takes around eight minutes. From the mountain station area, a mountain lake with sculptures can be reached on foot in approximately 30 minutes. The Schatzberg circular hiking trail offers views of the neighbouring Alpbach Valley. One stage of the Bikeschaukel Tirol also runs over the Markbachjoch.
Museums, Craftsmanship and Regional Specialities
The Bergbauernmuseum z'Bach displays more than 1,200 exhibits on the austere life of Tyrolean mountain farmers. From June to October, a craft market takes place there every Thursday. Demonstrations include woodcarving, woodturning, felt slipper making, flax spinning, basket weaving and beekeeping. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with insights into traditional working methods.
More than 3,000 exhibits are displayed in 59 wooden chambers at the 1st Tyrolean Wood Museum. A one-kilometre-long themed wood trail adjoins the museum. The dome frescoes of the Antonius Chapel depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. For family outings, the Drachental Family Park with its 18-hole adventure golf course is another possible destination.
Seasons and Local Identity
Wildschönau also showcases its regional character through festivals and specialities. The annual Talfest traditionally includes a large parade on Sunday, with a different theme each year. Krautinger is a turnip schnapps made from the white stubble turnip and distilled exclusively in Wildschönau. In summer, cheese tours are offered at Schönangeralm. For the colder season, the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area has beginner lifts in Oberau and at Roggenboden.
Choosing the Right Base
A holiday apartment in Wildschönau can serve as a base for cultural activities, walks, mountain rides or seasonal excursions, depending on your travel plans. If short distances and quiet walks are the priority, the Auenweg and the Wirbelwindweg are important reference points.
