Kundl combines a striking gorge landscape with protected nature, a rich mining history and remarkable cultural monuments. The Wildschönauer Ache runs through the main settlement area, flows through Kundler Klamm and then empties into the Inn. This gives the town various options for a holiday: you can plan an easy hike, combine nature observation with culture or explore Kundl’s history through its buildings and minerals.

Kundler Klamm as a highlight of your holiday day

The hike through Kundler Klamm follows a wide, gently ascending path suitable for pushchairs. This means that families with children or visitors with different ideas about an excursion can include a trip into the gorge in their daily plans without having to commit to a demanding route. In summer, a small sightseeing train also runs through Kundler Klamm several times a day. It travels from the Schlucht railway station to Mühltal and back, offering another way to experience this section.

At the entrance to the gorge lies the Kundlburg castle ruins, which are protected as a historic monument. In the eastern part of the market municipality are the “Söller Wiesen”, a 44-hectare protected landscape area with a core zone and buffer zone, as well as a wetland. These two locations offer different focal points: here, the landscape takes centre stage; there, the combination of the gorge and the historic monument.

Culture, churches and traces of mining

Kundl can also be explored through its buildings and history. In the 15th and 16th centuries, silver, copper and cobalt mining became increasingly important. At that time, the “Kundler Ofen” smelting works were established in the town. Anyone interested in the economic and local history of earlier times will find a tangible connection to Kundl’s development here.

The protected buildings include the Gasthof Post, the vicarage with its surrounding wall and the Kundler Klamm Bridge. The Gothic pilgrimage church of St Leonhard at the western entrance to the town is an outstanding late Gothic monument and a cultural attraction. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary represents a different era: it was built as a Baroque replacement for a Gothic church between 1734 and 1736.

A special tradition is the Leonhardiritt. The procession takes place in Kundl every year on the first Sunday in November in memory of Saint Leonhard. The House of Stones adds a geological perspective to the cultural offerings. Stones and minerals are displayed and sold there, including deep-green malachite, azurite, serpentine, fossilised remains and rare colourful conglomerate. Conglomerates and other rocks can also be polished there or made into useful objects.
