The surroundings are particularly vivid on the Kühtai Three Lakes Circuit: it passes two mountain lakes before continuing to the Finstertal reservoir. For more challenging activities, there is also a via ferrata leading to the 2,807 m-high Pockkogl. Its starting point is about 20 minutes from the mountain station of the DreiSeenBahn at 2,410 m. The equipment required can be hired at the valley station of the DreiSeenBahn.

Shorter excursions and outings with a different character are also part of the offering. The four-seater Drei-Seen-Bahn chairlift takes holidaymakers from Kühtai up to an altitude of 2,390 m, where there are numerous opportunities for walking and mountain hiking. In winter, Kühtai has a network of trails of varying lengths leading to tranquil spots and viewpoints. Snowshoe hikes allow visitors to reach untouched places via deeply snow-covered paths and slopes. Those who prefer to travel by bike can explore Kühtai by mountain bike or e-bike. A cycling tour covering a total of 35 km starts in Sellrain, passes through Gries and St. Sigmund, and reaches the highest point of the stage in Kühtai at 2,020 m.

With children, the KühSpielplatz offers specific opportunities for climbing, swinging, sliding and playing hide-and-seek. The playground also includes two wooden marble runs whose elements represent alpine farming and make cowbells ring. It can be reached by taking the DreiSeenBahn up to 2,410 m and then following a short, easy footpath to the DreiSeen Hut. This makes it possible to combine an excursion into the mountains with a playful break.

Another distinctive activity is the toboggan run in Kühtai. It lies at an altitude of over 2,000 m, is 1,300 m long in total and has 14 bends. An approximately 40-minute ascent along the hiking trail to the Graf Ferdinand House leads to the toboggan run. The Knappenweg leads to a miners’ house built in the style of the 17th century, with a small mining museum. In addition, the Knappenweg from Hochoetz to Kühtai is a circular hiking trail at an average altitude of 2,000 m with several stations.

Culture and insights into the region

There are also interesting points of interest away from the trails in Kühtai and its surroundings. Prince Leopold V converted Kühtai Hunting Lodge into a princely hunting lodge in 1624. Day visitors can visit the sun terrace and the castle bar of Innsbruck-Kühtai Hunting Lodge. The dam building houses an exhibition room and a separate film screening room with information about generating energy from hydropower and constructing the Sellrain-Silz power plant.

For travel to Kühtai, bus route 420 connects Innsbruck with Kühtai via Völs, Kematen, Sellrain and Gries. By train, you can reach the area via Innsbruck Central Station or Ötztal railway station and then continue by local bus or Kühtai Taxi. Those travelling by car can use the Kühtai High Alpine Road. It reaches a mountain pass at 2,020 m and is free of tolls and does not require a vignette.
