Ratten combines the history of a former mining village with experiences in the landscape of the upper Feistritz Valley. The village lies at the foot of the Fischbach Alps and is part of the Joglland Waldheimat region. Those planning a trip with nature, regional history and a variety of activities will find different ways here to plan enjoyable days together.

Experience Mining History Up Close

The village’s past is particularly evident at the Ratten Mining Museum. It is designed as a show mine in the remnant of the tunnel from the “Friedensstollen,” which closed in 1960, and was integrated into the original tunnel entrance. The museum features, among other things, Polish timber framing, polygonal timber framing and ring support structures. A mine locomotive, a personnel wagon, mine carts, miners’ tools and equipment, photographs, mine lamps and explosives provide insight into various aspects of mining.

Historical traces can also be found outside the museum. Tatzhof, now the Krainer inn, is the oldest secular building in Ratten. The Rosary Chapel was built in 1664 and contains a magnificent Renaissance altar in black and gold. During Advent, life-size wooden figures of the parish patron Saint Nicholas show visitors the way to the local businesses. This special local tradition changes the character of the villagescape over the course of the year.

Hiking, Wind Farm and Recreational Lake

For an active excursion, the Hauereck-Steinriegel Circuit follows the Mining and Moon Trail from Ratten up to the high-Alpine wind farm. The Steinriegel Wind Farm on the Rattener Alm consists of 21 wind turbines and is therefore a distinctive destination along this route. Those wishing to combine a hike with a specific landscape and technology theme can include this circuit in their day’s plans.

Another highlight awaits you at the natural recreational lake owned by the Albert family. It is a ten-minute walk from Ratten town center. This makes it possible to add a quieter period by the water to your stay in the village without having to set aside an entire day for an excursion. The mini-golf course run by the Ratten Mini-Golf Club is located in the center of Ratten and offers another way to enjoy your stay in a playful manner.

Excursions with Children and Flexible Day Planning

The RatzFatz Erlebnis Arena in Ratten is an indoor playground for children. It complements the outdoor activities and can therefore be taken into account when planning alongside mining, trails and the lake. This allows you to set different priorities depending on your interests: an insight into the village’s history, a hike up to the wind farm, time at the recreational lake, mini-golf in the center or a visit to the indoor play arena.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Ratten, it is worth considering the daily rhythm you want. For a trip focused on mining history and hiking, it makes sense to compile your planned activities before booking. This way, you can choose accommodation that suits your personal mix of culture, activity, water and family time without limiting your stay to just one type of experience.
