Discover Voitsberg: Castle, Art and Trails
Accommodation in Voitsberg
Voitsberg invites you to combine the history of the town, art and physical activity. Historic town houses shape the town centre, while the Obervoitsberg Castle Ruins, distinctive façade design and the former mining site in Zangtal showcase different facets of the town. There are also trails on the Schlossberg and around Grafenteich Lake. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Voitsberg, you can therefore consider whether you would primarily like to discover culture, go for walks or include both in your holiday plans.
Town Centre, Castle and a Trail with Views
The historic town centre of Voitsberg is characterised by historic town houses. The town fortifications and Obervoitsberg Castle provide further insight into the town's past: from the 13th century onwards, both formed a defensive unit that was reinforced by Greißenegg Castle.
The history of the Obervoitsberg Castle Ruins dates back to a castle built in 1164 on land belonging to St. Lambrecht Abbey, commissioned by the Styrian sovereign Ottokar IV. The name of the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1183. Today, an accessible trail leads from the foot of the Schlossberg over the Schlossberg to the castle ruins. Sections run past the old castle wall and offer views of Voitsberg and the surrounding area.
Important for planning your day: You can walk around the Obervoitsberg Castle Ruins at any time and enjoy views of the Lipizzanerheimat region. However, the castle ruins themselves are only open and accessible during events. There is an open-air stage on the plateaus of the castle ruins. It provides opportunities for cultural activities and is the venue for the traditional Burghofspiele theatre festival in Voitsberg.
Art and Mining History in Voitsberg
A striking cultural highlight can be found at the Arik Brauer Town Hall. In 2002, Arik Brauer designed the façade with pictorially represented sayings. Around 120 m² of hand-painted tiles depicting proverbs in mosaic form were installed on the exterior walls for this purpose. The town hall can therefore be regarded as a destination in its own right for anyone wishing to experience art directly in the townscape.
At the Zangtal Energy Adventure Park, the history of mining is explored through relics. These include the old bucket-wheel excavator “Leopold”. The park extends north of the Voitsberg Castle Ruins across a former mining site that is gradually being transformed into a landscape park. The site includes a sculpture park presented as an art trail. It is also home to 120 different plant species across 300 m².
The Franz Weiß Museum displays numerous woodcuts, reverse-glass paintings, early works and unique glassworks by Franz Weiß across two floors. Guided tours of the museum are available for groups by prior request only. If you are travelling with several people and would like to plan this visit, you should take the request into account in advance.
Green Spaces and Trails for Active Days
The Grafenteich recreational centre offers paths through the park and around Grafenteich Lake. The park is also the starting point for many hiking trails. In addition, there is a fitness trail and several popular running routes. This allows you to choose between a walk in the park, a run and a more intensive sporting activity without giving up the cultural focus of your stay.
The various trail options are also suitable for flexible day planning: the Schlossberg leads to historic walls and viewpoints, while Grafenteich Lake offers a different experience with park paths, running routes and fitness stations. Which holiday apartment or holiday home in Voitsberg is right for your trip therefore depends primarily on whether you would like to place greater emphasis on the town centre, the castle and art destinations or the green spaces.
