Deutsch Goritz combines an unusual cultural history with springs, forests and vineyards. Between the Roman Museum in Ratschendorf, the Seven Springs Trail and the Jaun wetland, you can discover different sides of southeastern Styria. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this is a good starting point when you want to combine a variety of experiences during your holiday rather than visit just one attraction.

Discover Roman History and Sacred Sites

The Roman Museum in Ratschendorf focuses on a walk-in Roman-era burial mound reconstructed to its original size in the museum room. It contains five burials and makes the site’s archaeological history immediately accessible. The museum is housed in a former cold store and is now a place to encounter archaeology, history and architectural heritage. To visit, collect the museum key from the Fasching “Zum Hoferwirt” inn opposite the museum.

The Catholic parish church of the Immaculate Conception in Deutsch Goritz is also part of the village’s cultural character. According to the 2025 heritage list of the Federal Monuments Authority, it is protected as a historic monument by decree. Ratschendorf is also home to the Maria Helfbrunn pilgrimage church, which is protected as a historic monument by decree according to the same heritage list. The renovation work had been completed; on 1 May 2025, visitors were invited to a May devotion with the blessing of the renovated church. The history of the pilgrimage site also includes the Lourdes Grotto: it was built in 1881 above a spring and on the site of an old wooden hut that had previously served as a bathing hut and the first chapel.

Springs Trail, Wetland and Historic Landscape

The Seven Springs Trail in Ratschendorf starts in front of the church in Deutsch Goritz and leads to various water-related places of power in southeastern Styria. Along the way, hikers pass the Peter Spring, where they can sample mineral water from a fountain. This combination of exercise, water and regional tradition offers a special way to experience Deutsch Goritz step by step. Those travelling with children can incorporate specific discoveries into their daily itinerary without making the holiday exclusively about museum visits.

Another nature experience awaits you in the Jaun wetland south of Deutsch Goritz. In spring, it is home to a large population of spring snowflakes. The Hügelstaudach grove is also home to one of the 34 Roman-era burial mound cemeteries in the Radkersburg district. The historic landscape is also reflected at the Wäsch, a site of cultural and historical significance where hemp and flax were once dried and the village farmers’ laundry was washed.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Travel Plans

At the same time, the village is surrounded by well-maintained, healthy forests. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider which priorities should shape your stay: cultural and historical discoveries, routes to water-related places of power, nature observation or quiet days in a landscape characterised by vineyards and forests.

You can also get to know the region through its cuisine. The Puntigam oil mill offers a guided tour from pumpkin seeds to finished pumpkin seed oil, including a tasting. Together with the Roman Museum, the Springs Trail and the historic sites, this creates a varied programme for travellers who want to combine regional history, landscapes and culinary enjoyment.
