Krakaudorf combines living traditions with small cultural attractions and varied paths through the Krakau region. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can combine different day plans here: an insight into the local religious culture, a visit to the mineral museum, or a circuit around the water and through meadows and fields.

Customs and Special Places in Krakaudorf

A distinctive landmark of the village is Krakaudorf Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Oswald. Its church festival is known as “Oswaldi” or Oswald Sunday and is celebrated on the first Sunday in August. Faschingrennen is also firmly rooted in the traditions of the Krakau region. It is one of the oldest customs in the Krakau and takes place in Krakaudorf every odd-numbered year. During the Samson procession, a man carries a figure that is almost 6 m tall and weighs 75 kg. Such traditional customs give a stay a cultural focus without requiring every day of a holiday to follow the same pattern.

Another destination is the Edelsteingarten Mineral Museum. It is a natural history and natural science museum and displays 40 valuable gemstones from around the world. The Edelsteingarten can be visited free of charge. The Garden of the Elements also includes a small Kneipp facility with a footpath as well as a herb spiral containing various herbs. This allows a museum visit to be combined with a brief outdoor discovery.

Northeast of Krakaudorf, the Calvary Chapel stands on a hilltop. Inside is a life-size, rustic depiction of a Calvary crucifixion group. The folk-style woodcarving was created around 1700. On the way to the chapel, four small wooden chapels mark the Stations of the Cross; they contain characteristic carved groups. The Krakau Village Circular Trail Trilogy: Part 2 also leads to the Calvary and back to Krakaudorf.

Circular Trails Between Lake, Stream and Landscape

Several different routes are available for active days. The Krakaudorf Swimming Lake Route starts at the municipal office and follows a circular trail around the lake. In summer, the swimming lake offers a refreshing way to cool off. Those planning the Krakautal Circular Hiking Trail will find parking spaces by the church in Krakaudorf. The trail leads from Krakaudorf to Krakauschatten and back again.

The Schaflechner Route is signposted as a Nordic walking tour in the direction of Dorferalm. As the elevation increases, there are more viewpoints. A different landscape experience is offered by the NW-8 Rantenbach Circuit: it leads to the Rantenbach and back to Krakaudorf, through the meadows and fields of the Krakau region and along the Rantenbach. Depending on the kind of holiday day you want, you can include a circuit around the lake, a path through the cultural landscape or a tour with a greater focus on elevation in your plans.

A Suitable Base for Planning Your Holiday

When looking for accommodation in Krakaudorf, it helps to define your preferred daily rhythm. If the church, chapel, museum and local customs are the main focus, a culturally oriented plan is a good choice. For active days, the circular trails mentioned above and the Nordic walking tour can be considered separately. In summer, the swimming lake complements the range of activities with time spent by the water. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment or holiday home based on the experiences that are particularly interesting for your travel group.
