Michaelerberg combines scenic hiking trails with distinctive mountain destinations, winter activities and a remarkable cultural history. The area is particularly suitable for travellers who want to vary their holiday days: one day on a longer stage of Panorama Trail 100, another on a family-friendly route to Stiegleralm, or with a visit to historic buildings. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can therefore first consider which of these experiences should be the focus of your trip.

Hiking between Panorama Trail and Kochofen

The Michaelerberghaus is located at 1,300 m on Michaelerberg in Moosheim and directly on long-distance hiking trail 100. From there, a panoramic view opens up over the Gröbminger Land as well as the ridge, Stoderzinken and the Dachstein massif. Panorama Trail 100 is approximately 117 km long as a circular hiking trail and passes through Michaelerberg. If you are planning a longer hiking trip, you can consider the stages of the southern section: The first stage takes 5.5 hours from Öblarn via Gatschberg and Stein an der Enns to Michaelerberg. The second stage runs from Michaelerberg via the Sattental valley.

For an independent day tour, the hike to Kochofen is a good option. The circular route starts and ends at the Michaelerberghaus, is 7.1 km long and has 730 m of ascent and descent respectively. The route leads through the forest, above the tree line onto a rocky ridge made of Sölker marble and onward to the summit cross. In places, there are deep views into the Sattental valley. The stated distance and elevation figures help you choose a tour suited to your daily schedule without confusing the different hiking experiences.

Another option is the route to Stiegleralm. This is an easy family hike from the Michaelerberghaus to Stiegleralm and follows a farm track suitable for pushchairs. This allows you to plan an active outing differently from the longer Kochofen circular route or a stage of Panorama Trail 100. If you are travelling with children, you can take these different trail profiles into account when planning your location and daily activities.

Winter routes around Michaelerberg

There are also specific destinations to consider when planning your trip in winter. The toboggan run on Michaelerberg starts at the Michaelerberghaus and initially follows a 3 km prepared forest road towards Kochofen. It then continues downhill through the forest on natural snow. The run is unlit and has no ascent aid. For a day of tobogganing, you should take the 3 km forest road, the subsequent natural-snow section, the lack of lighting and the lack of an ascent aid into account. In addition, the Michaelerberghaus ski tour starts directly at Ennsboden in Moosheim.

Culture and historic buildings

In addition to trails and mountain destinations, Michaelerberg also has a cultural side. St. Michael's Church is dedicated to Saint Michael and dates from the 13th century. The Catholic branch church of St. Michael, with the former cemetery grounds in Moosheim, is a protected monument in Michaelerberg-Pruggern (Michaelerberg). The Moosheim Castle complex is also a protected monument and is also known by the names Thanneck or Thonegg. These buildings give your trip a historical focus without requiring you to limit your holiday to a single type of activity.

Which accommodation location suits your holiday

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Michaelerberg, you can compare your planned starting points with your preferred daily itinerary. From Moosheim on the Enns, a 7 km road with 500 metres of elevation gain leads up to the Michaelerberghaus. For a hiking trip with longer stages, the route of Panorama Trail 100 and the Michaelerberghaus's direct connection to long-distance hiking trail 100 are important points of reference. If the route to Stiegleralm is the main focus, this starting point should be included in your considerations. For a cultural stay, by contrast, Moosheim, St. Michael's Church and the Moosheim Castle complex come into focus. When choosing your accommodation, check which place name and starting point match your specific plans.
