Gams bei Hieflau combines gorge hiking, geology, living traditions and excursions for a range of interests. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base will find a place with an unusually wide range of points of interest: NothKlamm leads through a landscape carved out by the Gamsbach, GeoDorf Gams is located in the heart of the UNESCO Global Geopark Styrian Eisenwurzen, and special customs also form part of the local character throughout the year.

NothKlamm and geology as defining experiences

NothKlamm has a 700 m-long trail through the gorge. The current route is important when planning your visit: it is currently not possible to complete the entire gorge hike. At present, you can hike as far as the stone-ball mill and must then return along the same route. At the exit of NothKlamm, a stone is shaped completely into a ball using water power at the stone-ball mill.

Since 2022, geological excavation sites for children have been located along NothKlamm. In GeoWerkstatt workshops, collected stones are cut and identified. GeoRama also presents sections from the region’s 250-million-year geological history. This means that a stay in Gams bei Hieflau can be planned in many different ways: outdoors in the gorge, observing water power or exploring the rocks in greater depth.

Excursions, water and winter sports

Kraushöhle can be reached after a short hike through NothKlamm and a brief ascent along an alpine trail. Depending on weather conditions, the GeoTrail can be accessed from the beginning of May to the end of October. To travel to the GeoTrail, RegioBus route 912 runs from Liezen to Hieflau railway station. In addition, the on-call bus on route 922 stops at Gams bei Hieflau Postamt.

On warm days, ParkBad Gams offers a 40 m-long water slide. The geological excavation sites and the slide give children opportunities to discover things for themselves, while the gorge and GeoWerkstatt offer other ways to enjoy shared experiences. In winter, Kaiserlindenlift Gams adds a tow lift and 750 m of pistes to the range of activities. Which holiday apartment or holiday home is suitable therefore depends above all on whether you want to focus your trip more on geology, physical activity, water-based experiences or winter sports.

Culture and special dates

The parish church of St Joseph in Gams bei Hieflau is dedicated to Saint Joseph. The procession of the Gamser Thomasnikolo on 21 December is a fixed date in the annual calendar. The Thomasnikolo celebration continues in the church square in front of the assembled village community, with musical entertainment and culinary delicacies. If you would like to experience this tradition, you should plan your trip specifically for 21 December.

Gams bei Hieflau as a base for planning your trip

The area’s strength lies in the interplay of nature observation, geological discovery, culture and seasonal activities. Plan a day at NothKlamm, choose the right period between the beginning of May and the end of October for the GeoTrail, or combine your stay with the Thomasnikolo date. For other destinations to include in your travel plans, you can also visit Großreifling, Gaishorn Am See, Bad Mitterndorf, Furrach, Pichl, Wildalpen, Rohrmoos-Untertal and Grundlsee. This allows you to choose suitable accommodation based on your preferred pace and planned experiences.
