Sommereben appeals to travellers who want to combine their stay with active pursuits in the landscape and distinctive traces of culture. The focus is on the “Tour around the Reinischkogel”: It leads through open high forest, offers views of Stainz and the Graz Basin, and adds notable stops such as the Klugveitl Chapel and the Lochstein to the day’s itinerary. In addition, the forest glassworks provides an insight into glass production in the 17th century. This allows you to set different priorities for your trip without having to commit to just one type of experience.

Hiking around the Reinischkogel

The “Tour around the Reinischkogel” begins at a car park near the Klugbauer inn/hotel in Sommereben. It initially follows Trail 551 in a westerly direction. The trail rises gently through open high forest, gradually changing the impression of the landscape step by step. The summit cross of the Reinischkogel stands at an altitude of 1,440 m. Along the way, the hike offers views of Stainz and the Graz Basin.

Individual stops also give the route its own character. The hike leads to the Klugveitl Chapel, where there is a bench for taking a break. There is an information sign at the Lochstein along the hiking route. For families or travel groups with different interests, such a sequence of landscape, viewpoints and cultural points of interest can be helpful: Those who enjoy being active have specific destinations to include in their planning, while the stops also provide opportunities for breaks and shared discoveries.

Further trails with different characteristics

The “Sommereben Circular Trail No. 58” begins at the BIOALM Wassermann inn in Sommereben. This means that, in addition to the tour around the Reinischkogel, several described starting points are available for planning your day. Which trail is the better fit depends on whether you want to focus on the Reinischkogel, a circular trail starting from Sommereben, or a route with clearly alternating uphill and downhill sections.

Another route is offered by the “Sommereben Run”. It leads uphill from culinary Greisdorf along the road towards Sommereben, mostly on asphalt as far as the Sommereben Chapel, and from there downhill back to Greisdorf. Its route therefore differs from the hike around the Reinischkogel: Here, the focus is on a route between Greisdorf and Sommereben, whereas the other tour starts in Sommereben and leads through high forest and to several stops.

Forest glassworks and historical insights

Those who would like to include history in their trip alongside nature will find a distinctive theme at the forest glassworks. The museum and protective building, constructed entirely from wood, provides an insight into glass production in the 17th century. Public parking spaces are available opposite the Klugbauer inn for the Forest Glassworks Museum / Glaserwiese. This means that this cultural focus can be included independently in your plans without equating it with the hiking routes described.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Sommereben, you can therefore first consider which experiences should define your stay. If you would like to plan the hike starting from Sommereben, select the area as your search location and take the respective starting points of the trails into account. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you can also include the Reinischkogel tour and the forest glassworks in your travel plans.
