Krimml – Waterfalls, Valley and Trails

Krimml combines impressive waterscapes with trails through a high-altitude valley and various opportunities for active days on holiday. The Krimml Waterfalls are particularly defining, with a drop of 380 metres and regarded as the highest waterfalls in Europe. The experiences described include the Krimml Waterfalls, the valley hike to the Krimmler Tauernhaus and the start of the first Tauern Cycle Path stage in Krimml; the panoramic cross-country ski trail is associated with Hochkrimml.

Waterfalls and a special exhibition

The Krimml Waterfalls are among the most striking experiences on site. An important mobility note should be taken into account when planning: on the way to the Krimml Waterfalls, wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties can only reach the lowest waterfall. This makes it easier to assess before the trip which part of the waterfall fits into your own daily plans.

The House of Water offers another perspective on the subject of water. There, the interactive “Faces of Water” exhibition presents the journey of water from mist and haze through droplets and snow crystals, as well as streams and seas, to the eternal ice of Antarctica. Krimmler Achental and Valley Hike

Krimmler Achental is the longest and highest valley in the Venediger Group. Alpine farming has been practised in the valley since the Middle Ages. As a result, the landscape is characterised not only by mountain and water experiences but also by a long tradition of use. For a day of hiking, the easy valley hike to the Krimmler Tauernhaus is available; it takes approximately 3½ hours. This approximate time indication helps with planning the day without setting the route to a specific pace.

The Leitenkammer Gorge also demonstrates the power of water. The Wildgerlosbach, a powerful glacial stream, shaped the gorge with magnificent plunge pools and erosion formations. The Leitenkammer Gorge is well developed with viewing platforms and can be reached on foot from the Finkau Inn through a spruce forest in approximately 30 minutes. This makes it possible to combine a shorter excursion with a nature experience, while the Krimmler Achental allows for a longer valley hike.

Cycle Path and Winter Trails

Krimml is also a designated starting point for cycling travellers: the first stage of the Tauern Cycle Path begins in Krimml and leads towards Mittersill. The signposted Tauern Cycle Path branches off to the left from the main road just behind the railway station and crosses the Krimmler Ache.

In winter, Hochkrimml has a panoramic cross-country ski trail with views of the mountain world of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern. In connection with the cross-country skiing options of Krimml’s WinterWunderWelt, the 200-kilometre-long Pinzgau Trail is also mentioned. This puts different landscapes and forms of activity at the centre of holiday planning: waterfalls and gorges, a valley hike, a cycling stage or cross-country skiing in Hochkrimml.
