Unternberg is situated in the broad Murtal valley at an altitude of around 1,025 metres and combines historical discoveries with nature experiences along the Mur. This creates an interesting mix for planning your trip: you can explore cultural highlights such as Moosham Castle and St. Ulrich Parish Church, or focus on hiking trails, cycling tours and winter activities.

Moosham Castle and the History of the Area

Above Unternberg in the Murtal valley, Moosham Castle stands on a rocky hill on the wooded Mitterberg. The complex is Salzburg's third-largest castle complex. Its attractions include the princely chambers used during visits by the archbishops. Remains of a Roman settlement were also discovered at Moosham Castle, meaning that different historical periods come together at this site.

The museum at Moosham Castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour for groups of at least two people. If you plan to visit the castle, you should take this type of visit into account when planning your day.

Religious Art and Living Traditions

St. Ulrich Parish Church also offers some remarkable details. By the 15th century at the latest, a place of worship stood on the site of today's church. A bell dating from 1431 hangs in the tower. In 1984, a Romanesque cross from the 12th century was also installed in the church. It is on loan from the Prodingerbauer farm in Tamsweg. Those interested in religious art and historical artefacts will find specific points of interest here for a cultural tour of the area.

The local cultural and traditional programme includes the Unternberg Farmers' Autumn festival in summer. Another special feature is the carrying of the Samson figure, which was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in Austria in 2010. Alongside nature and architectural history, these traditions give a trip an additional seasonal and cultural focus.

The Mur, Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Mooshamer Moos in Unternberg is designated as a protected landscape area. At the Mur River, Erlebnisreich Mur invites visitors to relax and enjoy nature. Active days can include idyllic hiking trails, varied cycling tours, Nordic walking and mountain biking. You can therefore choose your holiday apartment or holiday home according to your preferred travel rhythm: it is just as possible to plan a stay focused on activity as a trip that alternates between brief moments in nature and cultural destinations.

The Himmelsteig trail, designated as No. 88, runs above the town centre. Information boards there explain measures for the restoration of the protective forest on Unternberg's sunny side. In winter, there are idyllic winter hiking trails. A cross-country ski trail also runs along the Murtal valley near Unternberg. The nearby Katschberg ski area can be reached quickly from Unternberg by ski bus or car. This means that a stay in the town can also be combined with a trip to a winter sports area, without prematurely classifying Unternberg itself as a purely winter sports resort.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?

If Moosham Castle, the parish church and local traditions are the main focus, a trip centred on cultural highlights is a good option. Those who prefer to alternate between hikes, cycling tours, experiences along the Mur and winter trails will find a broad range of documented activities in Unternberg. When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home, the most important factor is therefore which experiences you would like to combine during your stay: history and traditions, nature by the river, or activity during the warmer and colder seasons.

For further orientation, you can also look at St. Martin, Tweng, Begöriach, Zederhaus, Mariapfarr, Ramingstein, Göriach and Sankt Michael Im Lungau.
