Salzburg-Flachgau combines lakes, mountains, nature experiences and an unusually rich cultural history. Families can choose between a day at a museum, birdwatching along the Weidmoos themed trail, excursions on the water and paths marked by traces of history. Discovering cultural history

An impressive starting point is the Salzburg Open-Air Museum in Großgmain. It features 100 reconstructed original buildings from agriculture, crafts, rural trades and industry. Craft demonstrations and seasonal traditional events such as an Easter market or the traditional raising of the maypole provide further thematic points of connection during a museum visit.

In Oberndorf, the Silent Night Chapel stands on the site of the former St. Nicholas Church, where the Christmas carol was performed for the first time on 24 December 1818. The Silent Night Museum occupies two floors of the Old Rectory next to the chapel. Mattsee also offers several cultural destinations: the Abbey Museum is housed in twelve rooms of the historic provostry equipped for visitors; its abbey library comprises more than 3,000 exhibits, including manuscripts and incunabula. According to tradition, Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria built a church at Mattsee around the year 760 in honour of the holy Archangel Michael and founded a monastery at the same time.

You can experience the history of technology and crafts at fahr(T)raum Mattsee. It presents automobiles that Ferdinand Porsche developed at the beginning of the 20th century, first for Lohner and later for Austro Daimler. At the Celtic smithy in Seeham, visitors can watch Franz Lechner and Hermann Rosenstatter make “Celtic nails”. The Branch Church of the Holy Cross in Gebertsham is a rare Gothic cultural monument preserved in its entirety.

Lakes, trails and nature experiences

At six square kilometres, Lake Wallersee is the largest lake in the Salzburg Lake District. Stand-up paddleboarding and trips in small boats are possible on Lake Mattsee. “Seenland” offers scheduled and special services on Lake Mattsee and Lake Obertrumer; round trips depart from Mattsee, Seeham and Obertrum. The lido at Mattsee has a baby pool with a slide and a children’s playground. Four beach volleyball courts are located directly by the lake and have been specially expanded for children.

The Weidmoos themed trail is suitable for nature observation. Its twelve-metre-high observation tower has a telescope optimised for birdwatching. The themed trail is largely barrier-free and suitable for pushchairs. In the Salzach floodplains, the Auenwerkstatt near Weitwörth-Nußdorf in the Natura 2000 area offers nature experience and excursion programmes for adults and families. You can reach the Auenwerkstatt by taking the local S1 railway to the Weitwörth-Nußdorf stop and then walking for around 15 minutes.

In the southwest of Flachgau, the Untersberg massif extends over approximately 70 square kilometres directly on the border with Bavaria. The Untersberg cable car and various hiking trails provide access to the massif. A 7.5-kilometre ski route begins 15 minutes on foot from the mountain station of the Untersberg cable car and ends in Fürstenbrunn. The valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard is served by public bus routes 25 and 28 as well as trolleybus route 5. Buchberg Nature Park offers a summit loop trail with an observation tower; the Kraftweg trail leads to Hallstatt-period burial mounds associated with the former Buchberg settlement. The Kugelmühle mill lies directly on a hiking trail immediately beside the Wildkar waterfall and is part of the Teufelsgraben eco-cultural project.
