Sankt Koloman – Hiking, Nature and Culture

Sankt Koloman combines tranquil moorland landscapes, scenic alpine pasture trails and regional history. Around Lake Seewaldsee, on Trattberg and along the village’s cultural trails, families will find a variety of ways to spend their days on holiday: observing nature, enjoying longer hikes, taking family-friendly sections of trail, cycling stages or making cultural discoveries. Lake Seewaldsee and Trattberg: Experience nature along a variety of trails

The Seewaldsee protected landscape area is located in Sankt Koloman and Scheffau and covers 143.7 hectares. Lake Seewaldsee itself is a moor lake surrounded by quiet forests and gentle moorland meadows. Its diverse flora and fauna make it a special destination for anyone who wants to experience the landscape rather than merely pass by. On the right-hand side, the circular trail around the lake has a well-developed forest road suitable for families with pushchairs and wheelchair users. Important for planning your day: You can reach the paid car park at Lake Seewaldsee between the centre of Sankt Koloman and the district of Wegscheid via the Trattberg Panoramic Road; the drive takes around 15 minutes.

Trattberg offers a different hiking perspective. The trails there range from leisurely walks across alpine pastures to scenic circular routes over broad high ridges. The Trattberg Panoramic Road leads into an alpine pasture area with gentle pastures, rustic huts and expansive views. There are also various options for mountain bike tours: one route starts in Sankt Koloman and follows the paved panoramic road past the Enzianhütte and a viewing platform to Hintertrattberg. Another tour runs via Tauglboden and the Grundbichlalm onwards to the mountain pastures. More challenging is the 52 km loop around the Osterhorn Group with 2,500 metres of elevation gain, which passes Lake Seewaldsee.

Cultural trails and regional history

The 3.4 km Taugler Mundart Way of the Cross is a panoramic circular trail with five chapels. It combines exercise with a cultural theme and therefore offers a shorter alternative to the longer tours on Trattberg. A signposted hike also leads through quiet forest landscapes to Wilhelmskapelle at the foot of Wilhelmswand. According to the 2026 Salzburg List of Historic Monuments, the chapel is protected as a monument by ordinance and is considered one of Salzburg’s oldest sacred buildings. A chapel at this location was already mentioned in 1684.

At the Sankt Koloman Local History Museum, farm implements, school utensils, rocks and models provide insights into everyday life in the region. The Alte Branterer Mill is a historic architectural monument and offers an impression of old milling technology and the local economy. The Glacial Polish is considered Europe’s largest exposed glacial polish and a natural monument. Excursions for different days on holiday

The “Feuchter Keller” natural show cave can be visited on guided tours between June and October on weekends. In winter, Sankt Koloman has two well-prepared cross-country ski tracks for classic cross-country skiing and skating. In addition, two ice stock rinks can be rented for an afternoon or evening.
