Aggsbach Dorf is an interesting starting point for a journey that combines culture, landscape and trails. The village lies on the Danube side and provides one of the few access points to the Dunkelsteinerwald. At the same time, several special sights lead right into the history of the surrounding area: from the former Charterhouse and a historic hammer mill to a geocentre housed in a listed natural-stone building.

Trails between the Danube side and the Dunkelsteinerwald

Anyone wishing to discover Aggsbach Dorf on foot or as part of a longer route will find a notable connection in the NSWW: the trail from Nebelstein on the border with the Czech Republic to Eibiswald in southern Styria leads directly through the village. The Dunkelsteinerwald Circuit also includes Aggsbach-Dorf. Its fourth stage (DUR 4) runs from Maria Langegg to Aggsbach-Dorf. This allows you to combine your choice of a holiday apartment or holiday house with different travel plans: you can focus on one stage, on the landscape of the Dunkelsteinerwald or on the cultural sites in the village.

The Aggsbach River, which gives the place its name, provides one of the few access points to the Dunkelsteinerwald from the Danube side. This special location makes the village interesting for travellers who, during their stay, want to visit not just a single destination but also get to know the connection between the riverside and the woodland landscape.

Aggsbach Charterhouse and meditation garden

The Aggsbach Charterhouse was formerly a Carthusian monastery. It was founded in 1380 by Heidenreich von Maissau. Guided tours of the museum and church are offered at the Charterhouse by prior registration. Those interested in ecclesiastical art, monastic history or the historical development of the village can therefore specifically include a visit in their travel plans.

The meditation garden offers a special form of communicating history. Through “green architecture”, it makes the former large cloister and the hermit cottages with their seven cells visible again. In this way, you encounter the former layout of the Charterhouse not only through exhibits but also through the design of the garden. This creates a distinctive opportunity for travellers who enjoy discovering culture in peaceful surroundings and through tangible spatial details.

Hammer mill and geocentre

The history of Aggsbach Dorf also includes the Aggsbach-Dorf hammer mill. It was formerly the tool forge of the Aggsbach Charterhouse and dates back to the 16th century. Three overshot water wheels power the hammer, bellows and grinding system there. The combination of historic craftsmanship and water power adds another aspect of local history to a visit to the Charterhouse.

At the Steinstadel Geocentre, minerals, rocks and fossils are exhibited across two floors. The geocentre is housed in a centuries-old listed natural-stone building. During a stay in Aggsbach Dorf, you can therefore combine a cultural excursion with a look at the region’s geological features.

Getting there and choosing suitable accommodation

Aggsbach-Dorf can also be reached by bus. Bus route 720 operates along the southern bank of the Wachau between the railway stations in Krems and Melk; in Aggsbach-Dorf, you can get off at the Volksschule stop. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore consider whether you want to devote your days primarily to the trails, the Charterhouse, the geocentre or a combination of these destinations.

For further comparisons with other places, you can also view Weiten, Maria Taferl, Texing, Sankt Oswald, Dunkelsteinerwald, Laimbach Am Ostrong, Braunegg and Schönbühel An Der Donau .
