Zeiselberg combines centuries-old wine culture with paths through the extensive Gobelsburg cellar lane, historical traces and a viewpoint with sweeping panoramic views. Anyone planning a trip can combine different ideas for a day here: a wine tasting, a hike or an exploration tour to the Bründln springs and the remains of a pilgrimage chapel. This makes Zeiselberg a suitable starting point for holidays in which you can combine culture, exercise and regional history at your own pace.

Wine Culture Around Gobelsburg-Zeiselberg

The history of viticulture in Gobelsburg goes back a long way. Zwettl Abbey already owned vineyards in Gobelsburg in the 12th century and expanded Gobelsburg Castle into a winery in 1740. The oldest parts of Schloss Gobelsburg’s own cellars even date back to the 11th-century castle complex. These historical connections add depth to a visit without requiring you to limit yourself to a purely museum-focused route.

Schloss Gobelsburg offers cellar tours followed by a tasting of five wines. The tours take place on Fridays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m., last 2.5 hours and cost 34 euros. Registration is absolutely required; tours may occasionally be cancelled due to other events. If you would like to plan this visit, you should therefore take your preferred date into account in advance.

Cellar Lane, Winemakers’ Trail and Viewpoint

The extensive Gobelsburg cellar lane can be explored on foot in the direction of Zeiselberg. It is also possible to explore this direction by bicycle. Another path leads to the Zeiselberg district and onwards to the restored remains of the pilgrimage chapel “Maria Bründl”. These options offer different ways of getting to know the surrounding area: you can focus on a walk through the cellar lane or pursue a longer bicycle excursion.

For hikers, the Winzerdorfweg No. 63 is of interest. It is a circular hike from Langenlois to Gobelsburg. At the end of the cellar lane, the route turns right at the Burger winery. The trail can therefore serve as a useful, specific reference when planning a tour, while the cellar lane itself is also a separate focus for an excursion.

There is also a viewing tower on the Gobelsberg. From there, the panoramic view stretches from the Tulln Basin across the Danube Valley to the foothills of the Alps. This view creates a different focus from the cellars and historic buildings: anyone looking for natural and scenic impressions during their holiday can note the viewing tower as the destination for a separate part of the day.

Historical Springs and Regional Discoveries

The Bründln springs are also part of the local history. The Frauen-Bründl was first mentioned in documents in 1660 and was regarded by pilgrims as a sacred spring. At the entrance to Gobelsburg, coming from Langenlois, the Marien-Bründl combines the remains of a former chapel with a spring and a resting place. These two historical references open up further small destinations for visitors interested in religious traditions, springs and the area’s evolving history.

The present-day wine profile also includes the Josef Burger winery in Gobelsburg-Zeiselberg. Josef Burger and his family have run the winery since 1992; its winemaking tradition dates back to 1812. The winery currently cultivates grape varieties on 20 hectares of vineyard in prime locations. It produces fruity, lively white wines; depending on the variety, the red wines are matured in large oak casks or small barrique barrels.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans

When looking for accommodation in Zeiselberg, you can first decide which experiences should be the focus of your trip. For wine enthusiasts, the cellar tour, tasting and cellar lane are the main attractions. If you would rather combine different landscape and cultural sites, the Winzerdorfweg, the viewing tower and the paths to the Bründln springs offer different building blocks for your plans. You can then choose a holiday apartment or holiday house to suit your preferred travel rhythm and the time you would like to allocate to these destinations.
