Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems combines extensive hiking trails with unusual nature experiences and prominent historical landmarks. Around 140 kilometres of hiking trails, including several circular routes, offer a variety of opportunities for active days. At the same time, the cultural traces range from the medieval history of the castle to defining details of the parish church of Maria auf der Stiege. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore first consider whether the focus of their trip should be on hiking, observing nature, culture or a variety of activities.

Hiking among forests, geology and legends

A special starting point for shared discoveries is Milla’s Magic Trail. The circular route in Albrechtsberg has 10 interactive stations focusing on the forest’s animals and plants as well as the legends of Albrechtsberg. Depending on the weather, the trail can be accessed from mid-March to early October. This seasonal restriction should be taken into account when planning your trip if you specifically want to include the Magic Trail.

The Hartenstein Geological Educational Trail runs through the municipalities of Albrechtsberg and Weinzierl. At 9 stations, it explores rock formations, mountain formation and the metamorphic history of the Waldviertel. This gives the educational trail a different focus from the legend-based circular route: here, geological connections and the development of the landscape are at the centre. For longer hiking days, the wide choice of trails provides additional orientation, without every excursion having to be the same in character.

Nature observations and special places

The pasque flower and the wood anemone grow on the slopes of the Seidenbühel west of the village of Albrechtsberg and near the Gillause water reservoir. Both are considered botanical rarities of the Waldviertel. Those interested in plants and landscapes can take this information into account when planning their own excursions and experience nature not only as a backdrop, but also in its special individual details.

The Gudenus Cave is a passage cave approximately 30 metres long. It is located around 8 metres above the riverbed below Hartenstein Castle. Among the most significant finds from the cave are a 4-centimetre-long bone flute, described as Austria’s oldest musical instrument, and the incised drawing of a reindeer head on an eagle bone. The finds can be viewed at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. This means that a stay in Albrechtsberg can also be combined with a cultural and historical visit to Vienna, without locating the cave finds themselves at the same place.

Church and castle as historical highlights

The parish church of Maria auf der Stiege was finally completed in 1770. The original Gothic church includes remains of the tower complex, the chapel and the crypt. At the centre of the high altar is the miraculous image of Maria auf der Stiege; the two figures wear silver-plated crowns dating from 1520. Albrechtsberg Castle complements this historical focus: its oldest part dates from the 12th century, while the castle acquired its present form around 1770.

The historic buildings, Gudenus Cave and the educational trails each tell a different story and are therefore suitable for holidays shaped in different ways.

Further activities for different holiday days

Els has an outdoor swimming facility with separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers. A 26.4-kilometre mountain bike route also runs through the Albrechtsberg area. Fishing for trout and fly fishing are possible on the Große Krems. Schusterlucke can be reached via the new Vettersteig trail. Together with the hiking trails, this creates various options for days when the same activity should not be the main focus.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems, it is worth deciding in advance what kind of activities you prefer: hiking, geological topics, historic places, swimming, cycling or fishing each place different interests in the foreground. To continue searching for locations, you can also look at Straß Im Straßertale, Mitterarnsdorf, Stratzing, Oberarnsdorf, Lengenfeld, Langenlois, Mautern An Der Donau and Gedersdorf as well.
