Wolfsberg combines historic urban traces with diverse nature and family experiences in the Lavant Valley. Culture between City Walls, Castle and Museum

Parts of Wolfsberg's medieval city walls have been preserved on Schlossberg and at Rossmarkt. A special view of the city opens up from the tower of the late Romanesque parish church of St. Markus: an observation gallery is located there 33 metres above the city. Water, Paths and Active Experiences

The Water Educational Trail is ideal for a manageable hike. It starts at the “St. Gertraud Umkehrschleife” bus stop, takes one hour, is 3.2 kilometres long and has a medium difficulty level. The Bee Educational Trail near St. Andrä is 5.5 kilometres long and has eight information boards. It includes a display beehive near the former Müllerwirt inn in Mühldorf. The reference to the former inn remains part of the trail's history.

Klippitztörl offers two particularly different activities for active days. The summer toboggan run is 1,400 metres long and descends 260 metres in altitude. The adventure climbing garden includes suspension bridges, a via ferrata, rock and tree elements, as well as zip lines. Those seeking a quieter tour with views of the landscape will find a circular hiking trail with panoramic views on the Koralpe. It is considered a family-friendly tour and is suitable for easy to moderately difficult hikes.

The landscape also has striking destinations to offer: the Pomsbach stream rises in the Großen Kar, plunges 15 metres into the depths in several cascades and forms the Poms Waterfall natural monument. The Hebalm includes Lake Hebalmsee. In Bad St. Leonhard, St. Leonhard Church is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Carinthia. This selection makes it possible to switch between activity, observing nature and cultural sightseeing without limiting the holiday to a single type of experience.

Regional Specialities and Choosing a Suitable Location

Regional character also includes vinumpaulinum, the wine brand of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul. The wines of the St. Paul Abbey estate come from the vineyards of Archduke Johann near Marburg and from favoured locations in the Lavant Valley. Those wishing to include such culinary and cultural themes can choose a location for their accommodation that suits their planned priorities.

Wolfsberg is an obvious search area for travellers who want to focus on the city walls, observation gallery, castle and museum. For active days, Klippitztörl, the Koralpe or a water and nature theme may instead be decisive. Since 12 December 2025, the Koralmbahn railway has travelled to the Lavant Valley in around 36 minutes from Graz and around 3 hours and 5 minutes from Vienna. By car, the Lavant Valley can be reached via the A 2 Southern Motorway, with the Bad St. Leonhard, Wolfsberg Nord, Wolfsberg Süd and St. Andrä exits.
