Albeck: Discover Trails, the Mill and Mountain Landscapes

Albeck combines impressive natural experiences with regional culture and a variety of trails. More than 200 km of marked hiking trails lead through the municipality to viewpoints, natural monuments, churches and ruins. In addition, there is Hochrindl with 20 km of ski slopes, the Sirnitz Mill and special examples of rural building and craft culture.

Hiking Trails, Water and Natural Monuments

Albeck offers various starting points for walks and hikes. The Kneipp hiking trail leads from Sirnitz for around 1.5 km into the Enge Gurk gorge to a small waterfall. The route can be included as a specific excursion in your day's plans without committing to a full day of hiking. Another option is the “Hiking in the Realm of King Forest Spirit” trail, which starts and ends at the Herzl Hut in Hochrindl.

In the municipality of Albeck, a 1,000-year-old larch with a trunk circumference of more than 8 m stands near Hochwiditsch. The weather larch at Hochwiditsch was placed under nature protection as early as 1967. Sirnitz-Hochrindl is also located in the Nockberge nature and landscape conservation area. Culture and Regional Specialties

A small but richly detailed destination is the Wegscheider Cross in Albeck Obere Schattseite. It has a wooden rear wall, a gabled roof covered with wooden shingles and featuring curved bargeboards, as well as a cast-iron figure of Christ. Such details make the visit particularly interesting for travelers who would like to get to know regional forms and craftsmanship more closely.

Since 1997, a working watermill has been in operation at the Sirnitz Mill. The mill offers special milling days and demonstrations with guided tours; advance registration with the local mill association is required. This provides a specific reason to plan your stay not only around the landscape, but also around regional history and traditional technology.

The regional cuisine at Restaurant Schloss Albeck includes local fish dishes such as trout, char and Carinthian Laxn. The fish come from the local Hammer organic fish farm at the foot of the castle hill. In the wider area around Albeck, there is also Albeck Ruin, a historically significant structure that was built as a castle in the 10th century and first mentioned in official records in 1155.

Hochrindl and Choosing Where to Stay

Hochrindl offers 20 km of ski slopes within the municipality of Albeck, with views over Carinthia. There are also specific destinations away from skiing: the walking path from the car park on Hochrindl to the Anderle Cross is 3 km long. At the Hochrindl Ski School, you can hire snowshoes and poles by prior arrangement.
