Horitschon: Wine Landscape and Special Discoveries

Horitschon combines Pannonian landscapes, viticulture and fascinating insights into the town’s history. The town lies at the beginning of the Pannonian lowlands, rather than in a mountainous area. Its sheltered location south of the Ödenburg Mountains is influenced by the mild Pannonian climate of nearby Lake Neusiedl; Mediterranean and continental influences meet here. Anyone planning a trip can therefore consider Horitschon a destination for wine, landscape and cultural interests.

Vineyards, Circular Trail and Panoramic Views

The Blaufränkisch Trail offers an illustrative way to experience the landscape. The circular hiking trail leads through the Horitschon vineyards of Hochäcker and Dürrau. The clubhouse at Kirchenplatz is given as the starting point. If this trail is part of your day’s itinerary, you can take the starting point into account when finding your way around your holiday apartment, without having to decide on the rest of your destinations.

The Blaufränkischblick is also part of the trail and the wine landscape. From the platform, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view at any time of day. It also offers views of the Hochäcker and Dürrau vineyards. This makes the viewpoint an attraction in its own right for anyone who wants to get to know the character of the surroundings not only during a tasting, but also from a landscape perspective.

Viticulture as a Defining Part of the Town

Viticulture can be discovered through a variety of examples in Horitschon. The Moritz family has been cultivating wine in the town for more than 60 years. The Moritz organic winery manages around 3 hectares and grows exclusively Blaufränkisch and Blauer Zweigelt. The winery has been operated entirely organically since 2006. The IBY Rotweingut also focuses exclusively on red grape varieties, with an emphasis on Blaufränkisch.

Eichenwald Weine offers another facet: 90 % of its range consists of red wines, led by Blaufränkisch. The business is also an event venue with up to 1,000 oak barrels. Kohlmann’s tasting room offers premium spirits and liqueurs. Depending on the programme and group size, a tasting there may include a guided tour of the distillery and, on request, a regional snack; the duration is approximately 3 to 4 hours. This approximate time span is relevant for trip planning if you want to combine wine and landscape experiences.

Culture and History Between the Church and Roman Villa

The parish church of Horitschon is part of the town’s history. It was built in 1947–49 and dedicated to Saint Margaret. The Roman villa rustica, excavated at Teichäckern in 1933, offers a much older glimpse into the past. It was particularly richly furnished and had underfloor heating. In addition to wine trails and tastings, Horitschon therefore also offers a historical connection that fits well into a varied travel itinerary.

Choose Your Travel Time Based on Your Preferred Experience

If you would like to plan your trip around a special wine event, there are two different times of year to consider: Horitschoner RotweinOpening takes place at the end of May and offers open cellar doors. Fine wines are tasted directly from the barrel, while the participating wineries present their current range. Horitschoner RotweinHerbst begins at the end of October and likewise includes barrel tastings and the current range of the participating wineries. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be decisive whether you would prefer to combine your visit with late spring or autumn.

Horitschon is particularly well suited to a trip that brings together several interests: a circular hiking trail through the vineyards, expansive views from the platform, viticulture with different specialisations, regional tastings and historical sites.
