Güssing between culture, nature and eco-energy

Güssing combines cultural history, nature observation and insights into modern forms of energy. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can combine different ideas for each day here: museum visits and traces of history, observing wildlife at the Güssing ponds or gaining insights into eco-energy tourism. The choice of location can therefore be guided by whether culture, nature or a varied mix is to shape the stay.

Discover Güssing's cultural history

A prominent historic site is the Franciscan monastery in Güssing. It was founded in 1648/49 by Adam Count Batthyány I. For a more in-depth museum visit, the Josef Reichl and Emigrants Museum is a good choice. It is located in the building of the old court mill and comprises two museums. One part of the exhibition documents the emigration of thousands of Burgenland residents, especially to the USA, at the beginning of the last century. The second is dedicated to the Güssing dialect poet Josef Reichl.

The history of science is also present in the townscape. In 1583, Carolus Clusius created the work “Stirpium Nomenclator Pannonicus” in Güssing. Seven panels distributed throughout the town provide information about his life, his work and his significance. This creates a special opportunity to encounter a historic figure not only in a museum but also while taking a walk through the town.

When planning your visit, you should take the published opening hours into account: Güssing Castle is open from 14 March to 31 October 2026. The Josef Reichl and Emigrants Museum is open for visits from May to October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.

Ponds, biodiversity and eco-energy

The Güssing ponds add a strong natural element. The Ramsar protected area is an important breeding ground for waterfowl. The wetland is also home to more than 30 dragonfly species as well as numerous frogs, toads, European fire-bellied toads and newts. Those travelling with children can incorporate a quiet focus on nature into their itinerary and observe various groups of animals without dedicating the entire day exclusively to culture.

Another aspect of Güssing is its eco-energy tourism. The European Centre for Renewable Energy offers presentations on the Güssing model as well as tours of demonstration facilities in ökoEnergieland. The Güssing biomass district heating plant is also part of this offering. This allows a stay to be expanded with a topic that goes beyond classic attractions.

Events and practical information

The Güssing Cultural Centre and the Gerersdorf Open-Air Museum Ensemble serve as venues for the Güssing Cultural Summer. The Güssing Cultural Summer was founded in 2001 by Frank Hoffmann. Since the 1980s, Musical Güssing has staged musical productions at the end of every summer.

For mobility planning, the BAST call-based shared taxi may be of interest. It is coordinated with the public scheduled bus service and connects designated stops with the nearest public transport hub. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore consider not only the atmosphere you want but also which types of excursions and which form of travel to your holiday suit you.
