Hornstein combines nature experiences, history and outdoor activities within a compact area. Castle Ruins and Traces of History

The history of the village can be discovered in various ways. The historical walking trail through the centre of Hornstein comprises 18 stations covering the history of individual buildings and objects. Those with a particular interest in medieval traces will find the ruins of Hornstein Castle on the wooded hill above the village. The steep ascent begins next to Hornstein village cemetery. The ruins are a medieval hilltop castle and a historical and cultural monument.

Archaeological excavations within the castle ruins suggest that the site was fortified from the 13th century onwards. At the same time, the location offers a beautiful view over the Leitha Mountains and the surrounding landscape. This makes it possible to combine historical orientation and a landscape experience when planning your day, without both impressions requiring the same excursion destination.

Views, Cycling and Regional Cuisine

At 484 m, Sonnenberg is the highest elevation in the Leitha Mountains. From the observation tower on Sonnenberg, the view extends from Lake Neusiedl to the Lower Austrian Pre-Alps, including Rax and Schneeberg. Cyclists can reach Hornstein via the Leitha Cycle Route B11. The Leithaberg route is a mountain biking trail that runs mostly through the forests of the Leitha Mountains.
