Culture

The State Karakalpak Youth Theatre was founded in 1978 and opened with the play “Eglengen báhár”. Today, it stages classic works by local and foreign dramatists. The State Academic Berdakh Musical Theatre of Karakalpakstan is located in Nukus on E. Alakoz Street and stages creative performances.

The Centre for the Development of Crafts of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan works in the fields of carpet weaving, embroidery and yurt furnishings. The centre also runs training programmes led by leading craftspeople from Karakalpakstan and Uzbekistan.

The exhibition hall of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan is located at 52A Uzbekistan Avenue in Nukus. More than 20 art exhibitions are held there each year; the hall also hosts master classes, competitions and festivals.

Azatbay Otarbayev’s music workshop in Nukus specialises in traditional musical instruments and produces more than 15 types of string, wind and percussion instruments.

The Amet and Ayimkhan Shamuratov House Museum is located at 29 Sarayev Street in Nukus. It displays photographs, books, documents, portraits and concert posters associated with the couple, as well as traditional handicrafts such as carpets, household items and jewellery. The Ayimkhan Lapizi dance and ethnographic ensemble is affiliated with the house museum.

History

The archaeological collection of the Savitsky Museum comprises more than 15,000 objects and illustrates the cultural history of Karakalpakstan from the Bronze Age to the end of the 14th century. The State Museum of History and Culture of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in Nukus has more than 65,000 exhibits, divided into the departments of Nature, Archaeology and Ethnography, and Modern History. Its archaeological department includes artefacts and models of ancient settlements in Khorezm; the museum also displays fossils and specimens of rare or extinct birds and animals from the Aral Sea region.

The manuscript hall of the Berdakh National Museum contains written records in Arabic, Persian and Turkic. The museum also displays national jewellery and clothing, household items and archaeological finds.

The Karakalpak yurt located in the Ok-Kush complex in Nukus is described as the world’s largest non-dismantlable yurt; it has a diameter of 40.5 metres and is 22 metres high.

The Mizdakhan necropolis complex comprises mausoleums, fortifications, a caravanserai, a madrasa and other burial structures.
