Nur Kale is a historical and archaeological site in the Nurota District. Excavations indicate that the site existed in the 5th to 6th century; its two gates served the routes to the oases of Bukhara and Samarkand.

History
Archaeological findings indicate that people were already living in Nurota in the 1st millennium BC. Since ancient times, Nurota has been a cultural centre for handicrafts and various areas of applied folk art.
The Nurota Karizlar comprise 280 wells. The ancient karizlar in the Nurota District are a hydraulic system for bringing groundwater to the surface.
The chanaqah of the Panjvakta Mosque was rebuilt in 1582 on the orders of the Khan of Bukhara, Abdullaxon II. The Panjvakta Mosque differs from other mosques in Uzbekistan in that it has a chanaqah. Attached iwans, built in the mid-19th century, are located on both sides of the mosque.
The marble decorations of the Chilustun Mosque are attributed to the stonemason Abdurayim Turdiev from Gozgon. The mosque’s wood carvings are considered the work of Usto Shams. The site of a sundial used in the past has also been preserved in the Chilustun Mosque.
Culture
In Nurota, craftworker families pass down the secrets of national embroidery from generation to generation through the Ustoz-Shogird apprenticeship tradition. Nurota was one of six cities in Uzbekistan where the most important schools of embroidery developed from the late 18th to the early 19th century. Nurota embroidery has been known for centuries for its clear patterns and beautiful floral ornaments.
A two-day tourism programme in the Nurota District includes a tasting of Nurota melons and watermelons.
The Chashma spring in Nurota is a pilgrimage destination; its water temperature remains constant at around 20°C, and the fish in the spring must not be fed, caught or eaten. A pilgrimage tourism circuit has been developed in the Nurota District, linking the Chashma pilgrimage site with the Imam Bukhari Complex and the shrines of Yetti Pir.
