Fortifications and Architecture
Ichan-Kala is the inner fortress of Khiva in the Xorazm region. Its history stretches back more than two thousand years. Within the complex, 51 ancient monumental buildings stand alongside 250 residential houses. The Juma Mosque is one of its distinctive features: it is adorned with 212 columns. Those interested in historic architectural styles will find several scales of building here—from the complex as a whole to a striking detail inside the fortress.
Nurullabay Palace is also located in Ichan-Kala, in its northwestern part. It consists of four courtyards and has been restored. The ensemble includes nine large and small rooms, a reception room, an archive and a madrasa; there are also quarters for servants and guards, a garden and flower beds. The palace embodies traditional features of Xorazm’s national residential architecture. Its various rooms and courtyards invite visitors to pay attention both to the design of the ensemble as a whole and to individual areas.
Other historic sites complete the picture of the region. Ulli-Hovli was built in the 17th century by Uzbeks and Turkmen. Based on archaeological finds and cultural soil layers, Sulaymonqala is estimated to be at least 2,700 to 2,800 years old. The Qalajiqqal’a archaeological complex includes a fortress around 3,000 years old. If you are interested in history, these sites offer different points of reference: a dated building history, an archaeological age estimate, or the structure of a specific fortress.
Regional Cuisine and Experiences
The cuisine also contributes to Xorazm’s distinctive character. Shivit Oshi consists of bright green noodles made with a dill infusion and served with meat sauce and a tangy fermented milk topping. Tukhum Barak is a traditional Xorazm dumpling with an egg-based filling. The two dishes differ in shape and preparation. At Ulli-Hovli fortress, visitors can ride camels and horses, and stroll through craft workshops and a gallery. The park is also home to Uch Uchok, a geological and historic site formed by the impact of a large meteorite.
Qalajiqqal’a also brings together archaeological and landscape themes: the complex includes a salt lake believed to have healing properties. The Qalajiq health centre is also located on the site. Another recreational area is Ulli Shorkul, also known as the “Khorezm Sea.” It is located in Yangiarik District and includes a body of water. These places offer a different focus from visits to historic buildings; they may interest you if natural and waterside landscapes are among your holiday themes.
