Seydişehir: History, Nature and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Seydişehir
Seydişehir combines historic buildings, regional collections and outdoor recreation. Its history is especially tangible at the Seyyid-Harun-Veli complex; Kuğulu Park and regional handicrafts offer other highlights. The town therefore offers a range of ways to plan a trip that takes both culture and nature into account.
Historic Sites and Cultural Route
The Seyyid-Harun Mosque is in the southern part of Seydişehir, within the Seyyid-Harun-Veli complex. Seyyid Harun built it in 1310. The tomb of Seyyid Harun Veli was built later: he died on May 3, 1320, and the tomb was erected later that same year. The two dates mark the different periods in which the mosque and tomb were built.
Another tomb in the complex is dedicated to Şeyh Hacı Abdullah Efendi. It was built on the orders of Sultan Abdülhamid II for the scholar and sheikh of the Naqshbandi order, Hacı Abdullah Efendi, who died in 1903. Those interested in Seydişehir’s religious and historical heritage will find more than a single historical connection here. The Seydişehir Cultural Route begins at the Seyyid-Harun-Veli Mosque and tomb.
Regional Culture and Outdoor Recreation
The Adile-Baysal Cultural House displays a diverse collection of regional objects. These include traditional clothing, jewelry, wooden clogs and handicrafts made by women from Seydişehir, as well as regional carpets and kilims and looms. Ottoman bows and pottery shards are also represented. Knotted objects, cauldrons, bowls, weapons and household items round out the collection. Visitors interested in regional clothing, textile crafts and objects from different areas of everyday life will find several specific themes here rather than a single collection focus.
Kuğulu Park is recognized as a day-use recreation area and as Turkey’s 234th nature park. In summer, it can accommodate thousands of domestic and international visitors at the same time. This gives the park a different focus from the historic sites and collections: outdoor recreation is also part of what Seydişehir has to offer.
Trekking is also part of local development. The Homonada-Yolu trekking route is being developed within the boundaries of Seydişehir. The aim is to bring historic paths to light, combine history and nature tourism, and create a new trekking opportunity. The route is therefore described as a development project; its purpose brings together interests in nature and history, but this does not mean that a hiking offer is already available.
Cycling and Regional Specialties
At a three-day Seydişehir cycling festival, cyclists covered a total of 149 kilometers on a route in Seydişehir. The 3rd Seydişehir Cycling Festival included a camping cycling tour in Kuğulu Park, attended by 150 cyclists from various Turkish provinces. These festival experiences show different forms of cycling, from a longer route to a tour connected with camping; they do not indicate a future event date.
A regional culinary specialty is Seydişehir roasted chickpeas, which are still made by hand. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose Seydişehir based on what matters most for your trip.
