Discover Sarayönü: parks, history and folk culture
Accommodation in Sarayönü
Sarayönü combines a green place for walks and time outdoors with a layered local history. Beşgöz Millet Garden offers paths, quiet areas and shaded spots; mosques, traditional architecture and folk culture offer insights into different sides of the town. If you are weighing up a relaxing stay surrounded by greenery and cultural discoveries for your trip, you can find inspiration here for both as you plan.
Green spaces and time outdoors
Beşgöz Millet Garden offers walking paths as well as seating and quiet areas. This means you can spend your time there in different ways: take a walk along the paths, pause at a seat or enjoy a quieter moment in the designated areas. Shaded spots complement the green spaces. For families, play areas for children are also a specific feature of the garden, while the spacious lawns provide room for picnics, sports and other outdoor activities. If you are choosing a holiday apartment with a stay that includes plenty of time outdoors in mind, you can consider these options as part of your trip.
How Sarayönü developed
Sarayönü’s history goes back around 4,000 years. Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods are among the historical layers of the town. Its settlement core first developed around Pir Hüseyin Mosque. The railway later changed the town’s development: in 1896, the Anatolian–Baghdad–Hejaz Railway was built through Sarayönü, and the settlement centre shifted. The railway brought more activity to the town; this development was also evident during the years of the national liberation struggle. The town’s history cannot therefore be reduced to a single building or period.
Buildings and local traditions
Fatih Mosque is one of Sarayönü’s historic buildings. Hatip Mosque, built in 1656, is also located in the area. It was originally a small madrasa and was later converted into a mosque; historic inscriptions can be found above its entrance. If you are interested in the history of religious architecture, you can include these different clues about architectural form and former use in your cultural exploration.
The house of Lâdikli Ahmet Hüdai Hazretleri is located in Sarayönü’s Ladik neighbourhood. Its traditional Konya architecture is reflected in its stone walls, wooden elements and simple design. The house was restored and preserved as a historic building. Carpet weaving as a local craft and Gelinlere Örtülen Cibek Cavluk, an element of Sarayönü’s folk culture, also contribute to the area’s cultural identity. These traditions complement the view of its architectural history with forms of craftsmanship and cultural expression.
Places for reflection and further discoveries
The tomb of Ladikli Ahmed Hüdai Hazretleri in the Ladik neighbourhood is visited especially for prayer, quiet reflection and time in a spiritual atmosphere. The surroundings are kept orderly, well maintained and clean. The Ladikli Ahmed Hüdai Kuyusu fountain is nearby. Local people associate it with a spiritual atmosphere and wishes for healing; visitors sometimes draw water there and perform ablutions while praying. The fountain is therefore also a place where local religious practice can be observed. Çatal Çeşme is another named fountain in Sarayönü.
The underground city of Sarayini is located in Sarayönü district and is considered an important cultural heritage site. Narrow passageways, living spaces, storage areas and ventilation channels are among its described features. Use during the Roman and Byzantine periods is possible, but this is not treated as a certain dating. These historical themes suit a stay where, alongside the garden, you would also like to explore the town’s cultural history.
