Nizip: Mosque Architecture, Zeugma and Regional Traditions
Accommodation in Nizip
Nizip offers a wide range of themes: sacred architecture, the archaeological site of Zeugma, the local tradition of Nizip soap and a picnic area by the Nizip stream reveal the district’s cultural and nature-oriented sides. When planning your trip, it helps to start with a question: should architecture and history be the main focus, or would you also like to set aside time for nature? The answer can influence your choice of holiday apartment and the shape of your trip.
Mosque architecture with varied portals
The mosques in the town of Nizip feature a variety of entrances and portals. On the north façade of Çarşı Camii is a richly ornamented portal with floral motifs, paired columns, rosettes and medallions. Its design reflects an interaction between Turkish and Armenian craftsmen. The entrances of Saha Camii, Molla Ahmed Camii, Tahtani Camii and Şıhlar Camii also show how different arch forms and details shape a building: Saha Camii has a flat-arched entrance framed by slender, lightly fluted columns. On either side are two rectangular windows with straight lintels. Molla Ahmed Camii has a flat-arched entrance within a pointed-arch niche; round-arched windows and round-arched mihrab niches complete the design. Tahtani Camii combines a round-arched entrance with a pointed-arch niche. Four leaf motifs appear above the flat-arched entrance of Şıhlar Camii.
Flat arches, round arches and pointed arches are distinct forms that can be compared directly on these buildings. The portals also feature floral and geometric accents: columns, windows, niches, rosettes and medallions give each entrance its own character. The Fevkani Church is located in the Şıhlar neighborhood of Nizip. Its exact date of construction is unknown. Alongside specific architectural details, different historical traces are therefore among the themes that characterize Nizip.
Zeugma in Nizip District
The ancient city of Zeugma lies in the village of Belkıs in Nizip District, on the Euphrates. Its Roman villas and floor mosaics are considered the site’s most important archaeological features; excavations have so far uncovered only a small part of it. The mosaics make Zeugma a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in Roman villas and ancient visual art. Around 100,000 bullae were also recovered during the excavations. Archaeological experts describe this collection as the largest number of bullae held by any museum in the world. They are on display at the Gaziantep Archaeology Museum.
Soap-making traditions and time outdoors
Another regional tradition is Nizip soap. It is made from pomace oil obtained from Nizip’s olive oil residues and from the acidity of Nizip olive oil. The soap dough is cut by hand and naturally dried in a rack system for at least three months. These steps give soap-making its own rhythm: a long drying period follows the cutting. For those interested in local products, this is a different facet of Nizip from its architecture or archaeological history.
The Karpuzatan picnic area is also located in Nizip District, by the Nizip stream. It offers an opportunity to spend time in nature. In the municipality of Nizip, the Nizip Congress and Culture Center has a multipurpose conference hall with 1,000 seats.
Choose the focus of your trip
The featured attractions are spread between the town of Nizip and places elsewhere in the district: the mosques and Fevkani Church are in the town, while Zeugma and Karpuzatan are in the district. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Nizip, decide on your preferred focus in advance: sacred architecture, archaeological history, local soap-making traditions or time in nature.
